DO YOU THINK I'LL HAVE HOMEWORK???
OK, life altering decision here in the making........do i or don't i go back to school????
A few years ago i signed up for a year of work for americorps (which mirrors Peace Corps). they pay you a stipend rather than a living wage bc it is technically a 'volunteer' type service. the pay is less than minimum wage but its doable if you learn to budget. at the end of your year of service you recieve an educational award of about $7,000 (give or take). you can also sign up to go another year which will net you additional monies for your education. most young people do this to help with college fees and to help continue their studies and for the experiences you get by putting yourself last and helping your fellow americans. you can go all over the world if you want but i chose to stay here and work locally. i also did an additional year of service.
This is when i worked for the Family Service and learned so much. i got to take additional college courses concerning early childhood studies. i got to learn under the tutalage of a professionl chef. i got to go into the bowels of hell in inner cities and see just what the poor and destitute deal with on a daily basis. i also got to see the faces of children that thought that Santa wasn't coming and to find me walking through the door with boxes and bags and gifts galore......to put food on the tables of those that hadn't eaten for a long time.......to hold babies no one wanted......to cook for the food kitchens and serve that food and watch them oooh and ahhh over the simplest of things.......
I recieved awards for this work although my real reward was the actual doing of the work.  i got an award from the governor himself and was honored to have this given to me.......i got one from the mayor of baltimore city and again was honored........when i recieved my last one from the local community i was touched that they thought it was awardable work.
I never used the education grants given to me and actually forgot them.....i have 7 yrs to either use them or lose them or i recently found out i could add an extension to them......
I got in the mail the other day the reminder that 'time was slipping' away and i either needed to use the money or it would be null and void......sooooo i decided to use the money. I AM GOING TO RETURN TO THE HALLOWED HALLS OF EDUCATION.......do they still wear loafers and bobby sox???? lol
I  have a great deal of money in this account to spend on this so why not??? Hell, i can't be any worse off and i may actually learn something..... I may take some courses in culinery arts and pastry arts...... i also enjoy social work, working in the community with the less fortunate and maybe some computer courses to learn how this computer works so i can stop bugging other people. i found out i could use the money for other things too, like a new computer (if i choose) and gas allowances and lunch allowances, things i would need to actually 'get' an education.
I can see me now in the class room with all these 'teeny boppers'....jeesh do i really want to do this??? will i stand out like a sore thumb? will they make fun of me? is it too late for me? i am scared but i am doing it.......sooo DO YOU THINK THEY'LL GIVE ME A LOT OF HOMEWORK????

I think you should do it. There are people of all ages in college. You'll enjoy it and it will benefit your future. I started 3 years after high school and it's worth it now, I graduated 6 years ago.

hey super K, no worries about going back. I've gone back twice now and found there to be a variety of age ranges. Sometimes I was the young one, sometimes the old one and I'm in my 30's. All in all, it was worth going back. Good luck to ya.

Learning is a life-long thing! Have fun and enjoy doing it.

Kudos for working with the poor. One of the coolest things I've done is work in a "soup kitchen." Great experience.

the soup kitchen was one of the best experiences i had during that 2 yr period....i made them spaghetti and meatballs with a nice salad and garlic toast....they acted like they died and went to heaven....made me feel like a million bucks....smiling just remembering....i sat with the children while they ate and just loved it....best two years of my life....

Great Ideas!-----Progress is the key word to our existence. I have a kid brother, (35 yrs. old) and he finally closed his catering service as he opened his second restraunt! He works terrible hours but he and his family prosper! I am sure he would contribute some recipes to your cause and your key words should be -----GO FOR IT!

How wonderful ... you will do just fine. School is for all ages. My sister-in-law (in her 50's) has been taking some classes and I'm thinking of taking a creative writing class some time in the future. Best of luck to you. Peace.
