today is tuesday so that means i had my little munchkin riley all day. i have a riddle of sorts. what does a gold button, a broken knob, 1 lonely little black checker, 3pennies,some colored stones and an old sewing box have in common? it is the beginning of a day of treasure finds for one precocious 4 yr. old. i picked riley up this morning to find that he had saved me a chocolate heart his mom was making for her bakery. funny thing was there was no chocolate heart. he had found out that you cannot hold a chocolate heart in your hands without it melting so he ate it. i smiled and gave him a big kiss because it was the thought that counted (especially in this case). we proceeded to our usual rounds i.e. post office (he loves to be the big guy and get my mail), the video store (to get a dvd for quiet time), and then to lunch at mickey d's (a daddy hamburger w/ no pickle). today though since it wasn't below 0 we went to the park for a brief jaunt. i cleaned out my jeep while he played. as i was finishing i looked up and saw that he was searching the entire playground very intently. i assumed he has lost something but didn't know what because he didn't take anything with him. i watched him for a few minutes as he would stoop and pick up something and then go back to this intense searching. finally my curiosity got the best of me and i asked him what he was looking for. he had been searching for treasure. duh, grandma. wondering what he could have found i looked and in his tiny hands were these very tiny little stones of various colors. stones to me, treasure to him. it started to rain so we came home and he was very much into this treasure mode and while helping me pick up the house he found a black checker, a broken knob from a dresser, 3 pennies and a gold button in an old plastic sewing box. we took the box and washed it inside and out until it looked new and then put his new found treasure in it. i wrote his name on the top and he was so happy you would have thought it was an actual treasure chest filled with jewels, gold and money. as i watched him take these things out over and over again with his little dimpled fingers i thought how we should all be so happy over something so simple. one man's junk is another man's treasure. that saying meant so much to me today and i finally understood its true meaning because that old button, and lost checker, 3 cents, some colored stones and a plastic sewing box gave me more pleasure than a lottery win.
