 Still Life
STILL LIFE

I love living this piece of earth
in the way of the dawn
where the line is so fine
between the elements & our bodies
it blurs at the speed of life
Drench me in your sunlight for starters
then soak me with your driving rain
I feel like the tip of a lightning flash

Loving nature doesn’t mean
nature’s going to take it easy on you
Sometimes the wind’s so strong here
we shut off whatever’s using power
& sit quietly on the porch
holding the groaning roof in place with
the strength of our combined wills
So many deaths & still life keeps going

Once nature was the threatening enemy
lying in wait in the darkness beyond
the reach of the street lights
Once nature was what had to be stopped but now
we see we must stop fighting or risk never
witnessing the symphony of another evening
This is where the wind picks up
We’re in collusion after all

The muse of silence is holding a finger
to her lips & in our heads we hear:
“Turn back profane ones!
Tremble for now you are lost!”
Just as from another solar system
our sun appears to be a speck so all
the cells in my body have a separate life
& yet all of them love you
