I placed a couple of bets on Euromillions today. Only the second time I've ever done so and only because its an exceptionally large jackpot.. But it got me thinking.
I don't think gambling is a particularly good thing. Apart from a couple of ventures with the national lottery and euromillions, I don't believe I've gambled seriously at all. Sure, one experience of poker with friends and plenty of poker online with "fake" money, but nothing serious. At least in my opinion. I have enough experience to know why people enjoy it - it inspires crazy emotions, the beating heart, the disappointment, etc. But to seek instant gratification like that, and to put your current assets on the line like that for pure chance in many cases.. its irresponsible. We should at least weigh up the pros and cons. 3 or 4 pounds to win 88 million seemed acceptable to me, even with the low odds.
Recently I've been having problems sleeping, or rather, problems getting to sleep. Once I'm there its ok, but until then I'm left to toss and turn.. trying to find any thought, occupation or pleasure to keep me occupied until the sleep finally creeps in. A friend of mine once suggested imagining what it would be like to have lots of money, what I'd do with it. I guess thats the natural progression of thought when one has a shot at the lottery. What I didn't realise was that he wasn't just suggesting a scenario to indulge my imagination, he was offering me a pleasurable experience. I can only hope that most people when they think about that situation get a strange feeling of delight - allowing yourself to imagine the prospect of having whatever you want, or giving to people you feel deserve more. I realise this may sound shallow or obvious, but every person is entitled to feel good. So maybe what I'm trying to say is.. gambling sometimes allows people hope. And the chance to dream, without feeling bad about it. In that sense, I think its great, because sometimes I think I and others forget to get in touch with our hopes and dreams. A hazard that comes slowly with age and responsibility I fear.

I agree gambling is a good or not so good thing. Depends on the person and how desperate they are. I myself play the lottery every wed and sat the same numbers hoping they wiil come up and save our hard working butts. We lost everything, house to a fire, material things, work, etc and have been double working to get back what we had and the lottery is my only hope to quickly get what we need and not suffer anymore. Ya, we have jobs and it barely pays basic bills, so keep dreaming, play the lottery with in means. Hey its a trade off- if i didnt spend $6 every week id be drinking or renting movies! Dream on
