The poem is comparing a ship and the captian to America. The captian is Lincoln and the ship is the American public. It is a narrative poem because it is telling the story of Lincoln's guidence throughout the Civil War and the reconstruction of the south.

The poem is an example of a narrative poem and an extended metaphor because the captain is being compared to Abe Lincoln, and his death explains when he is assasinated.

It has the poem told in first person and it keeps refering to the captin saying "O Captin! My Captin!. Also it has I,me and other things that would make it a narrative poem and it talks about his life and what happend. Also that he is telling the story that he went through in his life.

it is telling a story about honoring someone(Abraham Lincoln)and it is comparing Lincolnt to the captain. Also it is telling Lincoln's story and how he died.
ex: Rise up for you the flag is flung-for you the bugle trills.
ex:it is some dream that on the deck you've fallen cold and dead.

Erin mullins your poem is narrative cause it is about a woman who fills hate for her lover and she goes and kills him. Then she says the lover's wife will be happy is dead because of the saying "till death do us part" which is the whole point of the poem.

The phrase is an example of a narrative poem, be cause the speaker is telling the story of the "captain" and how his death effected him. Also, it is an extended metaphor due to the fact "captain" represents Abrham Lincoln; leader of the United States of America

Captain O' Captain tells the tragic event of Lincolns death, thats why it is a narrative poem. But Captain O' Captain is also an extended metaphor because it Compares Lincoln, the leader of the US to a captain of a ship and his crew!

It is a metaphor because it compares President Lincoln to a captain and a ship to the people of America. It is a narative poem because the writer expresses his feelings towards Lincoln and Lincolns influence when he was alive.

To me, the poem resembles Lincolns life, and efforts after the war before his death. Since the plot is Lincolns assasination, That is the reason why it is a narrative poem. It is an extended metaphor because it uses the ship, and the captain, etc. as metaphors for lincoln.

The poem "Captian! O' Captain!" is both narrative and an extended metaphor because as shown in the text.....

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather’s every rack,
the prize we sought is won,
The port is near,
the bells I hear,
the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel,
the vessel grim and daring;

It shows that the President's trip is over from the seas and they can see land and hear the bells ringing in the air. and it is an extended metaphor because it compares abraham lincolin to a captian of the seas.

It refers to Lincoln as the captain and the ship as America headed to the goal in reach, the port(end of the war).

it's an extended metaphor, because the captain in the poem is Lincoln. The ship is the US.So in the poem, the captain dies, so does Lincoln.
