My cooperating teacher had the students redo the second half of the longer/shorter lesson. They took 10 unifix cubes and connected them into a rod. The students were partnered with another instead of doing it alone. The reason for this is because the teacher was not sure the students were understanding the concept or doing the work. This time around, each student was helping the other. Some tried to leave partners behind, but with a little coaching each pair worked well together. The instructions were for each pair to find six objects that are shorter than the rod of unifix cubes. Each student had a piece of paper to record (trace and name) the objects they found.
This activity really worked well. I was surprised to see Kindergarteners actively learning in pairs. It was amazing to see them tracing objects and passing them alone to their group member. It was also so great to see them exploring the room in a new way. The advantage of having them work in mixed ability pairs is that every student can see the room differently. This gives the others a great perspective.
This activity let me know that there are simple, low material, ways to incorporate group work. I have often questioned how I would expand lessons to make them less independent, more cooperative. It can be done! I am curious and excited to find more ways.
