| Over the Hill and Unemployed?
Being unemployed is one thing but unemployed, over 50 and living in a small town is quite an experience. Perhaps you simply do not want to retire or are not financially able to. What type of work are you willing to do; not all over 50's want to be Wal-Mart greeters. How about getting a job at a call centre. The pay may be lousy but they are always looking and are generally "Equal Opportunity" employers so age will never be a factor. But what if you still have much to offer in terms of intelligence and experience. What if you still want to push the envelope and need a job that challenges you? Would a company not benefit from hiring someone who was raised with an actual work ethic, someone who is capable of making decisions, accepting responsibility and taking an initiative, somone who can work without constant supervision? Gone are the days of staying with the same company for 30 years, working your way up and retiring to a rocking chair. After all, we are not going to need any maternity benefits, or days off to care for a sick child. We don't need to leave by 4:00 p.m. to pick the kids up from daycare. If you've worked all your life and raised a family, you have a great deal to offer. You certainly know how to get people to do what you want, you have learned to read between the lines, to know when you are being conned, you don't take everything personally, you certainly know how to work within an often tight budget and what about multi-tasking - we are the inventors of multi-tasking! We need to open the eyes of both small and large companies to the enormous wealth of experience being offered by the "Over 50 and not ready to retire" population. |
