 The Art of Attraction...?
Most people are familiar with cliched pick-up lines.  "Are your feet tired?" "Did it hurt?  When you fell from heaven, did it hurt?" or (a personal fave) "Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?"  Whether they're corny and grimace-worthy, or funny as hell, do pick-up lines really work?  And is attraction an artform you can master?

There are those that believe in love at first sight.  You see someone across the room and wham! you're smitten.  But it does actually have a scientific basis.  The human body is scanning the area  and matching it with your ideal 'qualifications.'  Subconsciously, you've read the finger-length, eye-spacing, earlobe type- and we're also able to whiff the scent of a person and recognize it.  Even from a glance, even across a room.

While pick-up lines can be ice-breakers, they can also feel rehearsed and flaky.  Most women (and men) find normal introductions and compliments much more palatable, since it shows a real interest in the person.  A me-ness, not an anyone-ness.

Body language is the unspoken pick-up line, where everything from breathing too close or defensively crossing your arms sends a message.  Being able to react positively to body language can increase your chances of a longer conversation.  For either sex.  Large pupils are a sign of attraction, which alcohol or drugs can exaggerate- and it also might explain the mystery of 2am beer-goggle-trysts.

For those of you that feel knowledge is power and lack confidence, there are courses you can take.  One, for men, offers 40 hours of training just to deal with the first 3 minutes of talking to a woman. (!) There is also the new reality show on VH1 called "The Pick-up Artist," where each episode is dedicated to a different part of The Art with experts on hand to give tips.

The true mastery of attraction is confidence. (*Yawn*)  Yeah, I know that in itself is a cliche, but cliches stem from oft-repeated truths.  At least some of the time.

It was interesting for me to find out that most of the rest of the world (non-English speaking) doesn't use or have a need for pick-up lines.  I found this out the funny ha-ha way, when a tipsy bricklayer invited me to his house to listen to his walkman.  And then felt compelled to explain that the headset had detachable headphones, so we could both listen.  At the same time.

Needless to say, he went home empty-handed and I went home to snort with derisive laughter.

So for those of you who feel naked without your pick-up line riding shotgun, please try to use a modicum of wit.  And remember that even if you aren't successful, it could have simply been that the object of your affections isn't programmed to like attached earlobes.  Kocka.

Approaching an attractive woman without sounding corny is tough. So I usually just stare uncomfortably from the other side of the room until she calls security...

Gee, and I wonder why I don't date much. Maybe I should invest in the training course...
