so i had a date last night.
not a date date. just an old friend came into town and took me to dinner.
well, i didn't have a babysitter, so it was me, him and my daughter.
plus her car seat which barely fit in his car, a diaper bag, crammed with extra diapers, a change of clothes, a bottle, juice, baby food, toys, pacifiers, burp rags, bibs, finger foods, not to mention my purse crammed with all of my essentials.
so basically it was me, him, Aysen, and a small cargo hold's worth of belongings that go alongside taking a child anywhere,
needless to say i was a little nervous.
especially after she cried the entire way to the restaurant.
but the evening ended up going wonderfully.
he was amazing with my daughter.
he held her and talked to her and spent the entire dinner picking her toys up off the floor. it was so cute how unaware he was that after the first three times she was doing it on purpose just to make him work for her affection. but it worked and he managed to get a smile and a laugh out of her.
score!
then we came home and he came inside.
i put Aysen to bed and we watched a movie.
we talked for hours and he didn't go home until after 3am.
i feel like i've accomplished so much more than just a simple outing.
i feel like i have moved on. i feel like i can do this. i can balance a social life and motherhood too. it sounds so small but its actually the mountain moving event of the year.
maybe i'm single. maybe i don't have a dad for my child.
but i have an example to set for her.
and seeing her mother happy and content is the best thing for her.
maybe she won't have a perfect life...but she'll see that despite everything a person can be happy, and no matter how crappy everything else seems, something as simple as dinner with a friend can brighten everything up.
maybe she'll be an optimist despite all evidence to the contrary :)

Glad to hear it. Single mothers deserve a social life. Even though you have to work harder to have one. :)

That was a wonderful post. Especially since I just took N and her daughter to dinner tonight. I hope she enjoyed her evening as much as you enjoyed yours.
