 first time mommy
so my kid is teething. i know, i know. big deal right? everyone teeths at some point in their life and its such a small fraction of time in the big picture of things....
but wow. who knew something so small could take over my time in such a big way?
i feel like every second of my day is tossing between bringing her cold teething rings and cuddling her to make it feel better. i think the only reason i'm mentioning this at all is because this small issue led me to the realization of a bigger point of view.
when she was born, almost eight months ago now, i thought i'd instantly feel something that lumped me into the group of mothers i knew. i thought i'd feel like an adult, like a mom, like i was really responsible for eveything that happened in her little world of bottles and bedtimes and binkies and burp rags. and yet...it was like i was babysitting. like having a puppy but no one considers people with dogs to be parents, right?
and then this teething happened. and suddenly she was looking at me to make it right. she was wondering why her mommy wasn't going to solve this problem as easily as heating up a bottle and rocking her to sleep. and i guess thats when it hit me....it wasn't the endless hours spent with her, it wasn't the feedings and the schedules and the drs appointments that made me feel like a mother.
it was when SHE finally acknowledged me as such.
it was when i looked at her and knew something was wrong and realized that she was turning to ME first, her mommy, to make everything in her world all better.

You can have several spouses, many bosses, hundreds of friends but you only have one Mummy.

There is nothing like it. N's daughter is eight months old also and teething. She looks to me to figure out what to do - and I wouldn't have it any other way.
