I am not the only person in Michigan, or in the United States for that matter, that has become incredibly frustrated with the situation that I'm in. I spent my college years earning a degree in History, knowing that I wanted to teach some day. After I received my degree, I went and earned my teaching certificate at another school back near my hometown. But here I sit, a certified teacher, with no hope of getting a teaching job anywhere in Michigan anytime soon.
Why? Well, No Child Left Behind is a piece of legislation that Bush enacted that says each teacher must be "highly qualified" to teach a subject matter. That's great, in theory, but all across the country school districts are finding it impossible to keep up with the financial burdens that this enflicts. I am feelig the effects of this since I earned my certification in History, not Social Studies. A History certified person can only teach History classes, no geography, current issues classes, government, economics, etc. However, a Social Studies certified individual CAN teach History. So I am one of the most unmarketable teaching candidates that you'll find.
So here's my dilema. I need to do something to make myself more marketable as a teaching candidate. The real problem is juggling everything around to do so. I work a full time job right now and have a almost-four-month-old at home. His mom and I are trying to save money by working opposite shifts right now (I'm on days, she's on evenings). With out going deeper into debt and falling behind on bills, how do I find time to take the classes that I need to get the job that I'm looking for.
Don't get me wrong, the job I have now is ok. It pays the bills, but you don't need a college education to do it, there is little to no hope of advancement, and it is so routine that it's mind numbing.
Wish I'd have had a little better timing and guidance when in college and maybe I could have avoided all of this. Woulda, shoulda, coulda...

Interested in working for an American school in Switzerland? Most teachers here come from the States and move here with their families. The School also provides accomodation and the necessary permits. Some people do it only for one year and get a great exprience which looks good on their resume.

I'd love to head over seas, but circumstances won't allow for that to happen. Both my fiance father and my mother live alone not too far from our hometown. We just had our first child and don't feel that we want to away from family at this point. We have concerns for the well being of our parents, and want them to be around their grandchild as much as possible.
At a different time, I'd love to do it. Now, just not in the cards. Thanks for the idea.
