Okay, I am used to playing peacekeeper in RT, thus, I am going to try and do some here in Thoughts with the current issues that seem to be bothering many and are the cause of much debates everywhere it seems.
Now let me first make this extremely clear, this is not a personal "dig" (for want of a better word) this is hopefully speaking on behalf of most of us here at Thoughts and, in a diplomatic manner...smile
1/
Swearing/Cussing;
There has been much said about this and cries of 'freedom of speech' that is fair enough
- I myself have even been asked whether I swear, two words, hell yes, in RT I do swear, although I try and keep it to a minimum..I am not some snobby, posh Brit, I am a down to earth woman, who loves a laugh/giggle etc etc
As far as blogs go, the main issue I believe is, people constantly swearing. IE: title of blog "so and so is a beep beep beep" then the first few lines that everyone can see, is filled with nearly every other word being a swear word, or something unsavoury, which everyone instantly see's (whether they want to or not) when looking through blogs to read.
Yes, I swear and I try if I must 'swear' within a blog, (my blogs which are open for all to view) I contain myself,
Why? because I think of others and also, I don't see that swearing all the time is needed to get any points across, of course, personally, it does not bother me if someone uses the "f" word once or twice for example within their entry - but otherwise if you really must cuss/swear to such an extent throughout both the title and the content of the blog entry, fine, your choice, but perhaps consider making your blog entries more private, as in friends viewing only? rather than subjecting everyone to it ..smile.
My last point on this matter, that some may forget, this site caters for all ages, from youngsters to teens onto the more mature/elderly persons who are members - I feel again perhaps that is something people tend to forget, hence my own blogs due to them being open, I watch my language and, most importantly I consider and respect others who are viewing them, so mayhaps a little more consideration is needed?
2/
Surveys:
There seems a sudden rush in countless surveys being posted in blog after blog, again causing some heated feelings.
May I make a suggestion to anyone who wants to start a survey?
- In the Community Forum, there is a General Discussion area, where things like surveys are welcomed, again, an example - if I wanted to start a survey on say, " 10 favourite hobbies" or "10 pet peeves", I could start that thread/post in there and then, everyone who wishes to join in, can post within that same thread, because, yes, they can be fun and that is what the forum is for - also, then others will participate and can join in too - and, it will reduce the endless blog postings of survey after survey:
again, perhaps more consideration and thoughtfulness is needed and, then everyone can be more relaxed and happy, yes?
3/
Flagging:
Yes, we do get flagged, some posts people do find offensive for various reasons,
I including others have had posts flagged, thats fair enough, if the content is maybe a bit say, tasteless or not to everyones liking, people have the right to flag,. I like others have had some jokes flagged, but have I made a song and dance about it? written another post to complain? no, - if however I felt perhaps it didnt deserve flagging, if it bothered me that extent [which it didnt/doesnt] I would quietly inform the Thoughts Staff in a mail to them.
So again, please consider, we may all get the odd post flagged, so what? they can still be read and yes, some may get more flagged than others, due to perhaps content or because someone is fed up with whats being said.
4/
Ignore function
This is currently only in use within the main forum, but, if needed, harsh as that may sound perhaps it maybe an idea to allow us to ignore people that we do not get along with in the main blogging area too, (again, for example, those that are constantly rude/annoying) then, people, like in the main forum, can choose who they wish to 'buddy' with within the blogs also? again, perhaps it may save some heated arguments/feelings - after all, we all at the moment, do have a delete function to remove any unkind comments left in our blogs,so, why not an ignore function also, if truly required
- again, this is just a suggestion to what some have mentioned and said.
............................................................ ............................................................ ............................................................ .....
This is just my opinion on the whole problems that seem to be emerging more and more of late, with more people getting heated and angry, this is meant to be a fun place, a place to share, to care, to blog, to enjoy is it not?
alot of us have enough misery in life or problems to contend with, without the stress and anger which not needed here is it?
surely perhaps if we all tried that simple thing - consideration - it would please everyone more, correct?
Its called harmony, getting along, not causing divides, upsets, rifts and discontentment... gentle nod and smile.
I am only writing this in light of what seems to be occuring and cropping up in debates and so forth and, what seems to be causing the most problems, shall we say.
- but, we need to work together - perhaps my suggestions (and this post will be placed within the main General Discussion forum also) will make for "peace" - surely it is worth a try, for everyones sanity and for the sites sake dont you think and please everyone?
Thank you and okay, I will now jump off the soapy box now and go in search of the three "C's" (cupcakes, coffee and course, choccy before my day starts)
Have a Happy Thanks Giving to all those that celebrate.
Love & light
A

My opinion on all of this debate is....
I wish everyone would just let everyone else BE.
These journals are supposed to be for self expression...my God...let us express ourselves.
If someone does not like it...do not read it!!
As for cuss words...they are just WORDS..no different than any other word.
Damn!...hehe!
Come on people..(not you Kentlass)...but the whole of Thoughts.com...let people be who they are.
The censoring is ridiculous!
I think I am going to go and cause a riot in the Community Forum now.
Peace.

Mmmmm...much thought here...have to agree with Kentlass - it's a public forum for all ages. come on DS be fair and get real - it's not a free speech society out there - that's a total myth - if we stand on the steps of city hall and shout swear words and obscenities we get arrested for offending public decency. anyone disagree perhaps? - go try it. I have had to compromise - painful - but necessary sometimes unless you want to live in a cave in the mountains. There are hundreds of thousands of words in the English language and if the author can't find the suitable words for a public forum then perhaps they need to go buy a dictionary or thesaurus. Thoughts.com gives us excellent facilities in the Forums - yes Kentlass has many good points put forward constructively.

I have to add that when I came to this site at first, I was almost tempted to run by the foul language used by some of the bloggers. In fact, I stayed off side for some time as I was horrified by the way some things were discussed. I'm not being a snob either but there are so many ways to get your point over without swearing. It's like a breath of fresh air to read something that makes us think, even when we avidly dissagree with the sentiments. So nobody is asking for anyone to be gagged, just to put your point over in a way that is not offensive to others.

I'm sorry, I'm going to have to agree with DS a bit. If you find something offensive, don't read it. There are laws as to what you can say from the steps of city hall, but those laws do not apply on here. Why do we have the tendecies to want control over what other people do? Ignore what you don't like because when you give it attention it's the response that the offenders wanted. This is a free speech forum on here and that is no myth unless someone pushes to have it otherwise.

Good post Kentlass and well said.
I am in the middle of both views here. First off, if a blog or post seems offensive to you then don't read it. If someone started cussing at or around me in real life, I would walk away from that person as I, personally, find it unecessary and really rather childish. If you can't tell me wihtout swearing, don't tell me. Thats my opinion is all.
I agree with the surveys, which may be better in the forum. The reason i say this is that Thoughts.com is not like MySpace, Facebook, etc, etc. It was never meant to be. I have a MySpace account but I realise that Thoughts.com is different, unique, special. Thats what drew me to it in the first place.
Yes, we should all "be" but we should all work together too, to keep this site the special place it was always intended to be.
Peace all.

I agree you don't have to read the content of blogs you don't like, but do they have to use the F word and others on the title? Some of the titles are so provocative they could be on the covers of Porn magazines, not on a site which, as Scotslad says, is designed to be different.

sighs, having just got home.
I thought I had been fairly clear and concise, evidently not - DS and Paul, I do have to point out that infact people have no choice but see some of the more tasteless inputs here when they look at the recent posts, I have c&p'd this as proof - the title and the first 'paragraph' of each blog can be seen whether we want to see it or not:

You yourself DS said you'd rather read people feelings etc, than surveys, correct?
Good lord, I thought this was a community, this post was designed simply to try and help find common ground and sense.
I am sorry, but I still think thoughtfulness and respect is the key.
galena, thank you, but, this may have made my decision.
jdajif, thank you hon, I will go and read your post, again, I thought I was being considerate and helpful here, it seems to have been read wrongly.
2rivers, overthehillandfaraway and scotslad,, thank you
Yes, thats what first drew myself here to Thoughts, it did not seem a catty, pushy or bolshy place, either in spirit or people - it felt unique, I totally agree.
But, it has changed slowly over the past couple of months, there does seem to be more pushy, angry, boslhy people here, or at least lets say, some are certainly emerging.
Sorry, I thought I was being helpful with this, seems not.
Blessed Be

Sorry for my misspelling of the word "site." I spelled it "sit." I always try to get my spelling correct but sometimes I slip. Also, I would like to mention that this is one of the most productive and constructive entries I've read so far.

I understand what kentlass is saying, maybe we need more privacy options without having to go fully private, and that some people misuse this site for advertising etc..i get enough junk mail through my door i dont really need to read it here, but i dont have to read those particular posts if i do not wish to.
Also when i signed up to thoughts, i assumed that there would be some harshly honest and slightly odd posts with bad language, because blogging is supposed to be public journals, and we do not censor our journals or diarys do we.
We are supposed to have free speach here, and most of us that i have got to know have struggled for years with hiding who they/we are and do not wish to hide our emotions or thoughts, if we have to watch what we say then whats the point?
If i was a parent i would not let my young children look on a blogging site unless it was specifically designed for kids only, people do assume that there will be adult content on a blog site, and as i said..thoughts would not be thoughts if our posts were not honest.
these remarks are not a dig at anyone and i am not wishing to start an argument, this is purely my opinion and until now i never felt or worried that my words may offend anyone!
if there is not a warning of adult content on the homepage of thoughts then there should be!
the only place any of us really have freedom of speach is in our diaries
i hope that is not taken away from us too!
and as i say on my profile i do not like nasty or downputting coments on anyones page but as was mentioed before, yes we can delete the comments but it does not stop us taking it to heart! but there is a fine line, especially with the written word, as some of us struggle to sence the tone of the text, particularly when someones grammer and punctuation are not to good (i am awful with punctuation as u probably all know)
so how do we judge peoples comments?
in the real world i worry about everything i say,and now i am concerned about that here to! i did not realise that i might offend people by using bad language(even though i rarely swear) or airing my opinion, i am new to blogging and i honestly thought that i could write with honestly without having to worry about offending anyone!
from what i can tell, over the last couple of days, i have offended people in some way, but as is in real life no one says to my face "Marie, i am annoyed with you.." or "marie i'm not happy with what you have said..."
also i have tried to get along in the forums but i find them very difficult to navigate.. i am not an expert on the internet, and if i cant figure something out after a few attempts i tend to give up, but i really do find the forum complicated, and i feel maybe i am missing out!
i hope i have not offended anyone and i really hope that i havent totally missed the point of thoughts, if i have someone please tell me and i will find somewhere else to post my thoughts without fear of this group politics that i will not put up with in life and am not going to put up with in my thoughts!
i love you guys very much and i hope my opinion doesn't upset anyone or alienate me from you in any way, it is my opinion and not an attack on anyone elses opinion or posts
xx love and hugs xx
please dont be mad with me..see i have never got paranoid about my comments before and i am doing it now! ha ha so much for being myself!

kentlass, these are very good suggestions.....I might also add that if people would keep in mind and adhere to the 'terms of use' and 'prohibited content' set forth by Thoughts. com, that they were supposed to have read and agreed to when signing up with Thoughts, many of the issues we now have, would not even exist!
