| 1984 |
I ended up just reading 1984 recently and have decided that the ending isn't as bad as I thought it was two years ago. His statement, "I love big brother," that ended the book is more understandable now.
Besides the obvious, I appreciate George Orwell's use of metaphors, anaphora, sensory imagery, and symbols/motifs.
I believe that the Proles create quite a bit of the book. They represent hope, labor, and Winston's escape. Winston is so obvious when it comes to wanting to use the proles to create a rebellion against the inner Party/Big Brother.
What I don't understand is, why have a Big Brother, if he does not exist?
Why not just the inner Party?
Why not just the brotherhood?
Why in the world must we have an obviously non-existant government figure when there are already many ways to control the people?
Why does O'Brien turn against Winston?
What THE HELL is up with totalitarianism?
Newspeak- if you realize, in the book, Newspeak is used a past tense phrase, a "used to be," although the book was written for the future.
What is Orwell trying to get across?
What is his point?
After such a good book, there are just so many questions that I guess I can't answer without the help of others.
I love George Orwell- he has very good structure when it comes to writing, his vocabulary is by no means mediocre, and he has a natural talent for making the plot amazing. He makes the book itself seem slightly realistic. (As realistic as it can be in a totalitarian government with absolute control, even on the human mind.)
Is this where we are heading?
I hope not, and I don't want to believe it... but we are slowly going from capitalism to socialism... soon we will fall into communism.
Will the Big Brother theory ever come into existence in reality?
