 The window by my bed.
My bed is parallel to the wall and at the end of the bed is "my" window into the night.  At first it was a problem when I decided one hot summer night, that I was going to lay at the foot of the bed rather than the traditional heads up way.(husband think's i'm crazy)  I just wanted a little fresh air and breeze that night....so I lay there looking out into the blackness, noticing the way the trees were looking over my home, the way our dog walked in and out of her dog house , as if she were bored and wishing she could just go somewhere other than her leash perimeters.  I see the neighbor's house about an 8th of a mile down the road, the glow of a light shining thru the widow (it is on every night, so I imagine it is a night light left on routinely).  The late night window visits then came more and more frequently, I would quietly sneak to the foot of the bed, trying not to wake the hubby...as he cannot understand why on earth anyone would actually sleep at the "foot" of the bed.  As time went by, he stopped complaining when he would awake and find my heels staring at him rather than my sleepy bed head.  I am drawn to my window like a moth to a flame...I actually look forward to going to bed now at night, where usually I would fight "bedtime" tooth and nail....insisting to myself that I was NOT tired, as the clock tick tocked past midnight.  Now I quietly sneak into bed , snuggle up under the blankets and push back the curtains to reveal my little portal into the night.

I'm not sure about the facination, I just stare out, thinking random thoughts of the day, watching my trees standing so proud and strong.  Watching the cars pass by on the road, wondering why someone is out this late..where they are going, where they have been...my neighbors night lite...probably a kitchen window by the way it is a little higher than the others, and a little smaller...yes , I think it is a kitchen window...probably a light above the sink that the elderly woman leaves on in case she or her husband get up at night to get a drink of water, or a late night snack.  A few times a week a late night train will come around, and I can see the red flashing reflection on the pavement from the crossing gates...a few months ago, there was a new security light put up next to the neighbors home, and it is really quite bright..so I have to shield it from my eyes, it is just  too much for my night eyes.  I took a piece of duct tape and put it on the "spot" on my window ....it covers the light nicely....funny, a duct tape patch on my  little window.  When I lay down I arrange my head to align up with the patch..although sometimes a little re-arrangement is needed so I slowly riiiiiipppppp the tape off the window and place it where is covers the glow.  Ahhhh...that's better.

The weather changed slowly, I would lower the window as the nights got cooler, soon I was down to about an inch of window open for my fresh air....then it was inevitable...I had to close er' down as falls wind turned to crisp for my nightly visits.  My home is an older "farm" type home with old windows...so we put  plastic up around them,,,,,except my window....no plastic can come between us, I will just cover up a little warmer...I can feel the draft coming from the top of the pane..sometimes I put my hand over it, just to feel the cold air...it refreshes me in these closed up times...it's nice to feel fresh clean winter air on my skin..if I put my hand on the window, it's cold to the touch yet so strangely relaxing to feel.

Soon...spring, then summer and again I can lift my little window to let the air come in at night...breathing it deeply and listening to the sounds of darkness ....and just smiling at the wonder of it all.

Wonderful post. I love the night also ... especially Summer nights with gentle breezes, crickets chirping and fireflies lighting up the darkness. Thanks for giving me a peek into your world. Peace.
