 The most vital thing
 THE MOST VITAL THING

When you feel like saying something
That you know you will regret,
                                      Or keenly feel and insult
                                                Not quite easy to forget,
That’s the time to curb resentment
                                                And maintain a mental peace,
For when your mind is tranquil
                                                All your ill-thoughts simply cease.

It is easy to be angry
                                                 When defrauded or defied,
                                      To be peeved and disappointed
                                                 If your wishes are denied;
But to win a worthwhile battle
                                                Over selfishness and spite,
You must learn to keep strict silence
Though you know you’re in the right.

                                         So keep your mental balance
                                                  When confronted by a foe,
                                         Be it enemy in ambush,
Or some danger that you know.
If you are poised and tranquil
                                                 When all around is strife,
Be assured that you have mastered
The most vital thing in life.

I am almost in tears:( How fitting for recent events...but...it feels like corking a bottle I cannot...have I lost control? The nice guy become the monster? WHY can't I be at peace without expressing my words/thoughts?? Why can't I cover my displeasure or disagreement with "sure, let's go" and "why not. let's do it"?

Thank You Roe, it's nice to hear from you. I love your profile picture...how cute, are those your puppies? They look like little cotton balls. :)

Oh My dear Brainstormer, I wish I could just give you a hug! And I so wish you would stop being so hard on yourself, calling yourself a monster...that is ridiculous! Learning to maintain mental peace in the face of adversity is a life long lesson. It's not something we just do...it's something we have to work at every day. I certainly have not mastered it. I don't think it means "giving in" to displeasure or disagreements, I think it just means, just walk away, knowing in your mind, that you are right. Why bothering proving it to some other ignorant person. Save your dignity, keep yourself poised and walk away. No acknowledgement speaks volumes.
Thank you for leaving such a special comment. You have not lost control at all...you are very much in controll!!
God Bless You!

Maintaining a tranquil mind and peaceful heart can be quite the challenge in today's world. I find it mandatory to spend time alone each day in quiet meditation centering myself and allowing God's sweet voice to speak to me. Each day is filled with countless situations and people who try to steal my peace and draw me into their drama. Knowing when to speak and when to remain silent is the key. Not every battle is ours to fight. Great post .... Peace.

Colorado, "Not every battle is ours to fight." How true that is!! Now, if we could all remember that, life would be so much easier! Thank you for your great words of wisdom once again!

Hollis...don't I know it! I've stick my foot in my mouth, one too many times. I've also spoke my mind when I should have kept it to myself. Now I just ask God to help me control the switch between my brain and my mouth. Somethings are better unsaid. Walk away and let it go. Thank you for you comment. I always LOVE hearing from you!
God Bless!

Hi,

I'd sort of like to speak on something here: this poem is completely and entirely unreasonable. Not to mention that it is horribly written.

You can't remain silent. People have many important things to say. What would the world be like if Martin Luther never tried to reform the church? If Martin Luther King Jr. never tried to reform the south? If the people of the north never disagreed about slavery? The list goes on.

On the note of this poem being horribly written: there are many, many words which could be eliminated, not to mention that this poem is completly didactic and has almost lost the entire sense of poetry within it.

DarkDwarf,
Thanks for stopping by and reading my post. You are definately within your rights to critisize this poem, althought you are writing to the wrong person. The Author of this poem is Grenville Kleiser, and it was taken from a PUBLISHED book of poetry called "Lines to Live By". I have read many of his poems and some are quite beautiful. Now unless you are a renown publisher of poetry, I hardly think your opinion holds water to most poets.
God Bless

Well "DarkDwarf",
I would like you to know that if your going to insult someone you can keep it to yourself. No one wants to hear your mouth. Everyone here has a positive attitude towards this poem and I would also like to let you know that this poem is actually a very very important poem in Perrine's Literature of Structure, Sound, and Sense!
So before you chance yourself on being negative, think before you look stupid in front of everyone.

Thank You very much for your support. You are very kind. I loved this poem and thought it was very inspiring. It spoke to me in the sense that not everything needs to be confronted. Not every issue needs to be addressed. Not every disagreement needs to be challenged. Sometimes it is best to hold your tongue and find the peace that is within ourselves and realize we will not agree with everyone or everything that is around us. But that is why we live in this great country. We have this thing called freedom to be different.
Thank you for your comment.
God Bless!
