This guy, a lead singer from a local band, said this: “I gave up Christianity to follow Jesus Christ.” It’s a very interesting comment and I can really relate to this and I think that a lot of other young people could also. I started thinking about all the questions I would ask this guy if I could interview him.
When I was little I wanted to become a famous journalist, a songwriter, a poet or just a writer. I loved music, books and magazines, my school holidays I used to spend in the library.
In primary school I remember going around the playground during breaks interviewing the other kids on what’s happening. I was so happy when a paper I wrote in Afrikaans appeared in the school paper!
My dreams were shattered when my mom said that books and magazines and CD’s was a waste of money… I stopped playing guitar and I didn’t read that much anymore. I thought that maybe my mom told me that because she thought I wasn’t good enough. That was about ten years ago.
Instead of reading I started hanging out with my friends more often. Instead of using my pocket money I started using it to go to the movies or eating out. In grade 8 I started drinking and smoking and using my money to buy alcohol and cigarettes. In grade 12 I started smoking weed, luckily that didn’t go on for long. If it weren’t for my friends I made after school I would probably be binge drinking and using drugs by now!!
I still party a lot. But I don’t like the study course I am doing right now. My job is okay, but not really what I want. My family is so proud of me for the first time in my life because of my studies and my job. I don’t know what I should do, because I am not happy.
