| I Am A Witch, I Am Not Wiccan.

Yesterday someone who meant no offense asked me what it was like to be Wiccan. I couldnt respond to them with any knowledge because I am not Wiccan, I am a witch. I follow the British Traditionalist form of witchcraft, Wicca is a term that was developed in the mid 1950's by Gerald Gardner when he split from traditional witchcraft and formed his own coven along with his own interpretations of witchcraft. I follow what is called "the old path" or "the old crooked path". It really is witchcraft in its purest and most simple form. During the period from the 1960's to the 1990's, several different "Traditions" of witchcraft were developed. There is Gardnarian, Alexandrian, and several others who are what are considered Wiccan. Most traditions differ in not only in small or seemingly insignificant ways but they also differ in terms of being monotheistic or polytheistic, all that means is that some traditions believe in one god or several gods. In my tradition, we believe in monotheism ( one god) and the goddess. What makes witchcraft different from all mainstream religions is that we believe that the God and Goddess are equal in every regard. Neither is more powerful than the other. In most mainstream religions, the only place for women is in the congregation and they play no part in the religious rite at all. In my religion, there is a high priest and priestess, and they are equally important in conducting our rite. After explaining most of this to the poor person, the last question was, what is a witch then....well, the answer is this. A witch is one who uses all the energy within ourselves and that lies within nature to accomplish a specific end so long as it doesnt violate our most basic belief of not harming anyone.

So, are there bad witches? You know, like ones that don't have the basic rule of not harming anyone. I just reminded myself of a line from the Wizard of Oz..."Are you a good witch or a bad witch?" haha

Hi Pauligan.....Yes, there are people who are what you would call "bad" witches, I think that in just about every aspect of life, there are always "bad apples" but...one of the teachings of witchcraft is called "the law of the threes" if you do good, it comes back to you three times over, if you do bad, then that also comes back to you three times over.

Hey Kate...I'm wicca, in a sense...I have my own mismatched sense of what is what - I'm rather knew and I don't know many things about the actual religion, there may not be much to learn and that is simply why but I always like hearing how other people regard their beliefs. Think we can talk about what makes what and what the differences are sometime?

Very interesting Kate.
Never met a witch before.
What is the basic theme of being a witch?
What drives you?
What gives it meaning to you?
If you have time, I really would like you to answer these questions.
I would appreciate it.

Sounds like being a bad witch wouldn't pay off in their favor. I wouldn't think anyone would want to be a bad witch.

Hi DifficultSoul, nice to meet you!! Yes I do live in Salem, I was born and raised here and for witches it is like the Holy Land! You asked why i was drawn to witchcraft, well, its a religion and what attracted me to it was its connection to nature. We see god and the goddess in everything on earth. We not only share the earth with plants and the animals, we can also learn from them too. Anther attraction for me personally is that I am a firm believer in natural and herbal medicines, and witches know and understand herbs. I was lucky in a way, my grandmother and great grandmother were both witches so I had an early exposure to it and to be honestm in this part of the country, it is seen just as another religion, witchcraft has been in this town since before the trials in 1692.

Hi Pauligan, I guess that some people are willing to trade off what happens to them in the future for a momentary gain. some are more interested in the here and now instead of tomorrow.
