 A Witches Broom

I was away for a couple of days, an unexpected chance to go to the mountains for a small break came along so I grabbed the opportunity. While I was away the son of a friend of mine found out that I was a witch and he asked a great question...Do witches really fly on brooms?  It may sound funny but you would be amazed how many times that question or a comment about witches flying does come along. the answer is that no....witches do not fly on brooms, although brooms are very important to a witch. A broom is used in our cleansing and purification ritual. The broom is used to sweep away any negativity or evil from the area in which we perform our rite.  During the ritual, the broom never even touches the floor, it is used in a sweeping manner, but it sweeps the air above the floor and not the floor itself.   I am sure that most of you have seen a witches broom, they look like the one you see in the Wizzard of Oz,  today they still look the same, the ones that we use in rituals look like the brooms made hundreds of years ago. You dont have to be a witch to use a broom all you have to be is a little superstitious. Here in Salem, you will see brooms nailed or fastened to the front doors of peoples homes, believe it or not, that is an old tradition that started here in the 1600's. When a broom is laid across the threshold of a house or across the windowsill, it is put there to keep evil and curses out of the house. If the broom is across the threshold or across the windowsill, then evil and curses sent to you from another cant get in to the home. Today in Salem, you will see the old fashioned witches broom nailed to the front door, that is done for the same reason, to keep evil away, but some also do it as a decorative measure too. So, how did the old stories about witches flying on brooms get started?   That story started centuries ago in the very early days of the christian church. Back then, the christian church was  "competing" for followers and they found that people were very reluctant to give up the old traditions and beliefs. The christian clergy started the story about witches flying on brooms to try to put a fear into the people that being a witch or that following the old ways was being in league with the devil. The clergy started the story that witches flew on their brooms at midnight to meet with Satan.  That was one of the ways that they tried to win converts, it didnt work so well so from there they just started to kill witches , that was during a period known as   " The Burning Times".  Someday I might go into that part of history, but the broom does have a great significance to witches and always has, its just that we dont ride them. In fact, I drive a Miata.

I have heard real witches give interviews before and talked about the religion as rituals of evil as if they were part of an evil society etc.

Now I hear you talk about sweeping away evil and negative energies, I am really amazed that there is a group that is different.

I wouldn't believe the broom thing or such things. I know that witches are real people with real lives just as non-witches are. This is interesting to read about.

Hi Thunder, No real witch follows or worships evil in any way. Satanists do but not witches. In our religion, our behavior is dictated by the Wiccan Rede, it is a code of behavior. Witches also believe in reincarnation, our next life depends on what kind of life we live in the current life. If we want a better life, then we follow the Rede and what it commands us to do, if we dont follow the Rede or cause Harm in any way, our next life will be worse than our next life. The core of the Rede states that whatever good we do is returned to us three times over, whatever bad we put out also returns to us three times over. Our rituals give honor to the God and Goddess and we honor nature and our part in it. I dont know what group that you heard, but no witch respects or tolerates evil in anyway.

This is really interesting. I'm sorry if I sound ignorant about your religion. Thank you for this information.

Have a good one.

witches are a terrible thing but not if you are one yourself backtracking there somewhat but even so it is no good toil and trouble and frogs legs. Is it now? Admit it! Be nice. Be a nice witch if you have to be one but why not be a sprite? Nobody has a bad word to say about Sprite's do they. Why box yourself into a corner? Be a sprite with witch like tendancies. There now everyone is happy - except the witches maybe. No cursing me now. Sprites rule!

Koy, if you are going to quote me, try using words that i actually used. Your weak attempt at humor has failed miserably.

Ji jdaif, Thanks for the kind words on the post! There are a lot of misconceptions about witchcraft that need a little light shed on them to let people see what is fallacy and what is truth. As for the avatar, no, that picture is just something i found on a site that sells witchcraft supplies.

that's interesting and I didn't know that about the brooms

Hi Dottydoreen, almost every tool a witch uses has symbolic as well as a real use. If you think the facts about the broom was interesting, wait until you hear about the cauldron!

heh...back then...now...all the same...just look how the church banned harry potter from school libraries because they thought it was corrupting kids to the devil...evil satanic bible of some sorts even. Stupid people....

Anyways, good post...generally I don't use objects...but if I ever do Il keep that one in mind.

Hi Heizo, if you really think about it, a lot of the history of most mainstream religions use fear as their biggest weapon. Another point about mainstream religions i could never figure out was that most adopt the attitude of, our way is the only way. personally, i always felt that so long as the person found the path that is right for them, well, thats the important thing isnt it?

This was a rather fascinating read. It was spmething I never thought about before, so I learned something new. When you commented about the use of fear by mainstream religions, I have to agree with you on that.

Hi Wanderer, I am glad that you liked the post, fear is indeed a great weapon. Sometimes the clergy of mainstream religions should start practicing what they preach, the world would be a lot better off if they did.

I don't follow any organised faith, but I have found that the wiccan attitude towards aging has helped me embrace the beginning of my old age. I have hanging in my room a small witch (hag like) flying on a broom of course.
Posted by  bede  on 2007-09-04 12:42:41

Hi Bede, Aging is nothing to be feared but should be embraced ! The wiccan calendar or wheel of the year as it is called, reflects the cycle of the earth and the cycle of life. The town in which i live, has a seal that is on every police car, fire truck and on almost every street sign, it is the witch flying on the broom. The school sports teams here are also named the Salem Witches ! Again, as for aging, I am very glad that you have embraced it, it may sound stupid of me to say, but with age comes the wisdom and experience and peace that is needed to teach the young.
