| Why I should stop inhaling the bubbles....

While I was washing dishes today, I had an obscure thought:
The more legs a creature has, the less people care if it dies.
I don’t know why this random idea popped into my head as I scrubbed off baked-on cheese, but it wouldn’t go away so I decided to run with it and see where this thought took me.
Let’s look at the facts:
Centipedes/Millipedes: no one gives a bee’s thingy about these creatures, so if they die, meh. In fact, we care so little about them that no one even knows just how many legs they actually have, well I don’t know anyway.
Spiders: 8 legs. What is one of the most common phobias around? Arachnophobia = fear of spiders. This phobia gets its name from the class spiders belong to, Arachnid (useless trivia for the day J) and because we’re so scared of them and their 8 legs, we have no qualms about killing them.
Insects: They have 6 legs. Things like ants (annoying when they get in your house), grasshoppers (gross when they jump at your face), mosquitoes (itchy little buggers...) etc. I’ve killed more than my fair share of all of the above and have no regrets about doing it. But people are often less inclined to kill insects because of their important role in the food chain. So insects can lord it over spiders because of the leg number disparity.
Cats/Dogs/Horses/Cows: 4 legs. Other than slaughter-house workers, no-one is unaffected by killing one of the above 4 legged creatures. Well at least the normal people with a conscience are affected by it. We can’t kill off our own pet, even if it’s to put it out of its misery, so we take it to the vet to get them to do the horrible job for us.
(but what about the people with a pet spider?? [Slowly disproving my own theory before I've even thought of it here]. Oh wait, nope, spiders have more legs than 4 legged pets so we're ok with killing them ourselves).
Humans/Gorillas: 2 legs. It’s a terrible thing for a human to die, especially if it’s in tragic and accidental circumstances, eg a car crash. But it’s less of a tragedy for us if one of the 4 legged variety are killed in the same car accident and we exclaim “Lucky it was only the dog/cat/horse etc was killed!” Reason? We care less about things with more legs than us.
Gorillas/Apes etc and other hominids (the scientific name for the primates [including humans] with large brains, prominent jaws and no tails – another piece of useless trivia!) are fairly high up the ‘degree of caring’ ladder if they are killed and, true to my already off-beat theory, they have 2 legs (I think, because they use their ‘arms’ like we do). Well I’m going to classify them as having only 2 legs because otherwise it ruins my rant J. So where was I? Oh yes, because they have 2 legs, their life is viewed more important than something with more legs than 2, hence they are protected species.
I momentarily got stuck here, trying to think of a creature with only 1 leg that was more important that a human....but then, :-
Snakes/Whales: NO LEGS!!!! So these are the most important creature on the scale of
“How much do we care if a thing dies?” list.
How much trouble is Japan in for killing whales lately??? Because they have no legs, they almost get more publicity than the wars around the world where plenty of 2 legged people are being killed every day!
And snakes! Oh, don’t get me started about snakes over here!! I’m not sure if it’s a world-wide thing, but in Australia, snakes are a protected species so we can’t kill them, even if they do slither into our house.....(shudders).
So in conclusion to my bizarre theory, snakes and whales (and dolphins too I guess) cause the most controversy around if they are killed. Not sure if that’s even logical, because fish have no legs too but we don’t care about them as much as whales....oh wait! Whales are MAMMALS!! Ok revise: No-legged MAMMALS are the most important along with no legged REPTILES.
Oh lord, I really should stop inhaling the bubbles from my dish washing detergent....

Hmmmmmmm.......... never thought of it that way. I think I have to agree, except for the snakes, we've to many of them here. The venomous kind are fair game, I leave the nonvenomous kind alone, only because they kill the venomous kind and many of the small four legged kind. ;-)
