| So high up on my high horse I can't get off

I'm up on my high horse here and there's no one that can take me down from it on this issue!
Well it hasn't taken me long to find something else that annoys me to write about! This one comes courtesy of the newsrag impersonating journalism known as "The Courier Mail" , one of the biggest newspapers in Australia, or at least where I live.
Their article entitled "Police are armed with powerful voice-recording watches" which can be read here: http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,22736921-95 2,00.html once again slams Police for trying to do their job (ie. enforce laws and gather evidence against those breaking laws) in a fair and objective way.
This journalist thinks that by publishing a story about Police recording conversations they have with people who have broken the law, she's somehow discovered something controversial and (therefore)newsworthy.
Well if I've ascertained correctly from your "well-researched" article, the Police are using these recording devices when they speak with people who have broken the law, ie. criminals. They are not recording old Mrs Jibblets' telephone conversation to her daughter about her bladder infection; nor are they being used to record average law-abiding Joe conversing among friends. NO. It's being used to gather evidence to present to a court to prove that the said criminal has indeed broken the law, which is the reason they've come to the attention of the officers in the first place.
The usual snivel libertarians lawyers groups are (predictably) outraged that their clients (ie. the criminals) aren't always being told they're being recorded. Now let's just take a look at the situation here: these people willingly live in a particular state/county/country, accepting the welfare hand-outs, knowing that certain laws exist and need to be obeyed if they wish to live there. If they find it so impossible to live under these laws among the millions of other people who find them acceptable, perhaps they should seek alternative accomodation out of this state.
Subsequently, if they break the law, it is highly likely that they will come to the attention of the law enforcing agencies (ie. the Police, for those of you playing at home) and will likely be prosecuted as is required under the laws of whatever state/county/country they live in.
Given that they have deliberately neglected their responsibility to obey the laws of which everyone else is governed by, do they really think that they are in a position to negotiate, no, DEMAND the right to know if a person is tape recording them? If they don't do or say anything stupid, they will not need to be spoken to by Police, thus will not have their conversation recorded. On the flip side, they too are permitted to tape record any conversation they are a party to, but you don't hear the Police demanding to know if they are being taped by criminals.
What are they so worried about anyway? What, they can't control their verbal diarrhoea long enough to not get themselves into trouble everytime they open their mouth? They don't think they deserve to have to explain their actions to a Magistrate when they've broken the law and they're just pissed that they got caught? Do they think the Police are depriving them from millions of royalties owed when they post the soundbite of their stupid voice on youtube? Give me a break!
The more criminals that get caught out, the better. People should NOT be made to feel unsafe in public, they shouldn't have to fear being mugged by some drug-f%@ked moron (hey, I like the way it turned that last obscenity into an email address because I put '@' in there. He he, there it goes again!) anyway... .by a drug-affected moron each time they go out. They shouldn't have to lock up their property they've worked so hard to get only to have some scum break in, trash the place and steal shit because they're too lazy to work for something and make themselves a worthy contributor to society.
Instead of Criticising Police all the time, the civil libertarians/bleeding-hearts/do-gooders/journalists should remember why these people have been put before the court in the first place- NO ONE COMES TO THE ATTENTION OF POLICE FOR OBEYING THE LAW.
I say go ahead and record conversations all you like, Officers, you have my support. Apart from helping gather evidence of admissions etc in investigations (in which I may be misfortunate enough to be a victim of crime one day), it will help protect you, your reputation, and your job from vexatious complaints made by the pond scum of society who as stated before, are simply pissed they got caught out doing the wrong thing.

OH my! I couldn't agree with you more. I felt as though I was reading something I had written myself. (Only with fewer misspellings) Funny....but it's really not funny....it's annoying. I understand your frustration......Preach on Sista Girl.....

hi kaos!
nope!
gotta butt heads with you on this one...
civil liberty/privacy means freedom from invasive surveillance. i don't want to be videotaped or taped for any reason whatsoever.
i am not a criminal and have never had any run-in with the law.
the arguement that 'if you have nothing to hide' is fallacious from its premises.
so, in short, if a cop stops me in the street, recording me is an invasion.
:o)
cheers!
