I've been AWOL from thoughts lately - too busy getting ready for Christmas and working! But we're going to a birthday barbeque tonight (Christmas Eve) and it reminded me of another BBQ my husband and I went to a few years ago....
I was told that one of his mates was having a BBQ on a saturday night and that we were invited. Here's the conversation that occurred that day:
Hubby: "Justin's having a barbecue tomorrow night and we're invited."
Me: "That sounds good. Is it for anything special?"
Hubby: "No, he's just having some friends over."
Me: "Ok, do we have to bring anything?"
Hubby: "Just some breadrolls for everyone."
So we bought about 2 dozen breadrolls and arrived with nothing but our booze and the rolls.
It turned out that there WAS actually a reason for this party, not just a random gathering of friends as my husband had declared: it was his friend's BIRTHDAY. We had no present to give.
It turned out that we were also supposed to bring our own meat to cook.
We had no meat, let alone a salad!
But at least we had plenty of bread! And the rest of the party took pity on us and spared us a sausage each.
Of course I felt absolutely mortified, because as we all know, it's the women in every relationship who maintains the social ettiquette of a couple: Things like never going to someone's house empty-handed, or taking a platter even if the host says not to. So thus, I felt as though I, not my husband, had failed by not bringing anything for us to eat or a present for the birthday boy, and that we had to beg for food...
Lesson learnt: always double check with the host as to the time, date, place, what to bring, and the type of occasion, becuase your man will ineviteably get it wrong!!
PS we almost went to the wrong restaurant for his parent's 40th wedding anniversary 2 weeks ago because he didn't think to check the address on the invitation. Luckily I prompted him to go back home and get it....
Lucky I love him....
Merry Christmas to all and have a safe and over-indulgent holiday!
