Back in the 80’s, slippery slides were towering vertical toboggan rides into hell...
Remember back in the 80’s (and 70’s I’m sure) when lots of things were made out of wood? Things like bus stops and children’s playgrounds? Sure, things fell apart occasionally but stuff looked like it had character. These days, everything’s made of safe smooth metal or plastic with no sharp bits for any fools to hurt themselves in case they sue.
When I was a kid, we didn’t have those boring plastic yellow slippery slides that are around today. Our slippery slides were made from metal, and in summer, they got so hot you lost a layer of skin off your bum each slide. They were often quite rusty too which made for a fun and challenging slide- each time you made it to the bottom with your skin intact was a win for you.
There’s nothing like that now. No wonder kids today are turning to video games and television for entertainment. Their slippery slides are so tame! The slide itself isn’t even much of a journey- it’s a small little hump with a flat bottom so even the fat kids who might actually have had a chance of picking up some speed come to a slow, gentle halt.
Back in the 80’s, slippery slides were towering vertical toboggan rides into hell. No flat safe bit at the bottom, no you were catapulted off onto the bare ground at warp speed. No safe landing in sand or recycled tyres either, just the bare ground with jagged rocks waiting to catch you.
Back in the 80’s we were hardcore and we’ve got the scars to prove it! Even Detol today is tamer than it was in the 80’s I’m sure. Remember sliding down those terror slides, gashing the back of your leg on the exposed rusted bit on the way down, and then skidding across the hard rocky ground using your hands as brakes?
You’d limp home to dad, he’d take one look at you and start filling a bowl with boiling hot water. Then in went the Detol, that acid-like flesh- burning elixir from hell. By this stage you knew you were in for a bit of pain if you weren’t experiencing some already...
And dad was never gentle with the Detol bath (or the wire brush to scrub the pebbles of out of your wound). The Detol-soaked cotton wool ball was repeatedly dabbed on your gaping wound stinging you like a swarm of angry German bees.
Kids today don’t have precious memories such as this with their safety-conscious slippery slides. The worst they can experience is a mild shock of static electricity. But don’t tell the over-protective mums that or they won’t take their kids to the park in case they get electrocuted!

Hahahahaha! Wow! This is great entry. Too bad those hard core days are gone. These days the thrills come from video games. We should invent more physically dangerous ways of having fun.

I love this. I was a child through the entire 80s decade, being born in 1980. I know exactly what you mean...kids nowadays are kept in sterile little bubbles by their ultra-finicky moms.
