 The storm

The night was long and oh so dark
After the storm of the day blew in.
It started with the trees shaking and bending over
The sky was bright for moments at a time
The noise was loud and too close to home.
Next the siren informing the city to visit their basements
And see the water rising from holes and walls alike.
Within seconds the lights blinked off and the darkness eliminated the room.
Rushing around to find the flashlights with the bruises on the knees to prove it.
The heat was starting to roll through and the tension was rising from us all.
The radio squawked the news of the hour
While we opened up windows to move a few breathes of air throughout the house.
Trying to rest was not coming peacefully as the world was
silent
and dark
and still
and frightening.
Until the middle of the night when the brightness appeared from all sides, and the world came alive once again.
