| Atonement - A Movie Review

|
It's haunting me.
Robbie's face as Cecilia tells him to "Come back, come back to me" is still etched in my mind. And I still have that feeling in my chest... that inexplicable feeling - almost like a hang-over - that I feel whenever I watch a great movie.
I really didn't know what to expect when I bought Atonement. I just wanted to see James McAvoy in a human role because the only movie I've seen him in was Narnia, and to me, he was Mr. Tumnus, the fawn.
Now, after having seen Atonement, I will probably always connect James McAvoy to Robbie and his absolutely haunting romance with Cecilia.
I hate that I can't completely express why this movie has such a great impact without spoiling its ending, but wow... I mean... just... wow.
During the first few scenes, I felt as if I were watching a horror movie. I don't know but the use of a typewriter for music really gave me a creepy feeling. Maybe because it really built up the tension.
But eventually... the movie just captured my interest. I couldn't see anyone replacing James McAvoy or Keira Knightley in their roles as Robbie and Cecilia. They were perfectly cast.
However, I had a hard time seeing the girl from Dirty Dancing 2 play the older Briony. She just seemed... wooden. I wanted to see her remorse, her angst, her pain over what she did to Robbie and Cecilia. I just didn't see it with her. It wasn't in her eyes... most of the time, I felt as if she was just staring blankly into space.
Anyway, I think I'm already rambling in here...
But yeah... I don't regret having bought this movie. It's just... ouch... and wow... and so... ouch.
