Joy to the world, the Lord has come. Let earth receive......Oh, sorry about that. I was just singing a happy tune and didn't realize it was time to start writing. Yes, I know we are still 6 months from Christmas, but does that mean I can't sing that song I was singing?
In my daily devotions I am reading a lot about this topic of joy. Is it an obligation for us Christians to remain joyful? Even though the Bible says it is part of God's will for our lives (I Thessalonians 5:16-18), I don't believe it is or should be our obligation. It is our choice. I've written previously about choosing to be happy, and it is our choice to remain that way.
When you think about it, isn't life just so much better when we go through it with a positive outlook and a smile on our faces? Yes, I know it is easier said than done, but here's what works for me:
- Reflecting on God's word. When I relize how much God has done for me it is enough right there to put a smile on my face
Some verses....This is the day that the lord has made. Let us rejoice in it;Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice.
- Reflecting on past happiness. They say we are not supposed to live in the past. That's true, but I don't think we are to forget the past. On a regular basis I enjoy thinking of past events that made me happy. Past glories. Past victories. For me anyway, it is inspiration to create more of the same in the present, and it reminds me that great things CAN and DO happen in my life.
- Make others happy. When we give to others it is very rewarding. We love to see the happiness when we give to others, but I don't think there's anyone who doesn't feel good themselves in the process.
These are just a few examples, and I welcome any other suggestions. The bottom line is God wants us to be happy and to share this joy that we as Christians should have. If we can't be happy about anything else, we should always maintain the joy given to us by a God who sent His only son to die for us, and forgives all of our sins.
I will start this and every day with a smile on my face and I KNOW that it will be good. I wish anyone reading this the same. Have a joyful day
