In many countries now drug runners are executed by hanging or by firing squad. If there is a market for drugs they will continue to flow & rot societies who use drugs to the core. 'The good die first, only those whose hearts are dry as summer dust burn to the socket. John Lennon's song IMAGINE says it all. "Imagine there's no heaven. It's easy of you try..."

While I was teaching in Singapore in the early 1970s I went to see the Thaipausum Festival several times. The devotees meditate in the temple for 3 weeks & eat only a diet of milk & bananas. The purpose of the procession is to pay homage to Lord Subramanium, son of Lord Siva. Devotees carry kavadi through the streets. Their faces & bodies are pierced with rods & skewers & lemons hang from fish hooks on their bodies. I asked Tomachun my friend, 'why?" & he said, "to ask forgiveness from the god for something horrible s/he had done or to request that the god cure someone's illness or something like that."Each devotee has a chanting & drumming group of 'supporters.' Coconuts are smashed on the ground & tumeric water is thrown over the bare feet of participants.
In 1973 I followed the procession all the way to the Tank Road Temple. I recognised one devotees & spoke to him after have he had completed his devotions & the 'implements' had been removed by family & friends. I asked how he felt. He smiled & said, "exhausted." I said, "no pain?" He replied, "no pain." His face glowed & he looked serene.

Hello Pluto,
Do you love being blue, or would you like to let go of the pain & sorrow? I have met people in the past who like to wear their misery like a badge & they have a right to do that. Sitting & lying around feeling sad is something you can continue to do if you wish. But you could instead find something far more interesting to involve yourself in. Something perhaps that you have dreamed about but have never allowed yourself to do.

I am a musician too. Music is a wonderful way to liberate yourself. It is better to play music than to simply listen.

Just Wondering on 2007-07-30 03:25:17 |

I & many others in Australia wrote to John Howard not to support George Bush in the invasion of Iraq. Everyone knows there were no WMD. The depleted uranium lying around in Iraq was dropped in the first gulf war. Three & a half million people died in the Vietnam War & already around 700,000 people, most of them innocent civilians have died in Iraq. The invasion of Iraq has sharpened the teeth of muslim guerrilla fighters. The military of 'the willing' nations have followed the orders of their political masters & if they survive their deployment they will continue to suffer long after peace is restored. The horrible long term outcome is that Bush, Blair & Howard will expire in their leather arm chairs or in bed without ever having to pay personally for their dumb decisions. They will never be charged for initiating a terrible war that has turn Iraq into a bloody mess. Now Iraq has won a soccer match maybe they'll unite as one nation against the invaders & reclaim their oil wells from the multinationals & their contractors.

EVIL was invented so that the priests could bring fear into the hearts of their people & control them. George Bush has been taking righteous vengeance on the people of Iraq because in ikon of America, the twin towers was knocked over. Lancet, the British Medical Journal states, "If Iraq had not been invaded it is estimated that 654,965 people who died, would not have done so, according to an article in The Lancet, Thursday October 12, 2006" & that's months ago. Your Christian President & his cheer squad have blood on their hands. Blair & Howard have blood on their hands too. Yet in this crazy world they will not be charged in our life times as war criminals as we all love oil too much.

Blair supported Bush when the US invaded Iraq on a bunch of lies. Why should anyone trust him. Then after resigning as UKPM he's become a Roman Catholic. So now he represent the holy see. The british hostorically are responsible for a lot of what is happening in the ME now. They set up the states of Iraq & Israel during the colonial period.

Public figures should be held accountable on 2007-07-29 23:54:42 |

Hi D, 'The man of Steel' has run out of puff [Pickering did a great cartoon] but John Winston Howard has yet to be caught on camera doing something really disgraceful. As for the priest defending his patch. How would you like a bunch of teenagers trampling all over your yard? What did you expect the Monsignor to do? Kneel down on the concrete & pray to the father, son & holy ghost to zap them with a bolt of heavenly lightning where they stood? Now if John Howard had attended to the home front instead of following George W into Iraq there would have been more money to spend on our youth.

Death - The meaninglessness of life on 2007-07-29 23:44:41 |

Gombo,
What you have written has been regergitated as if it is pregnant with meaning & something to believe & live by for too many generations. If you choose to believe that sterile dogma you are of course free to do so. But if you really want to find meaning in your life then go out & look for it & let the speculations of the dead rot in the damp dungeons of eternity.

In 1975 my wife & daughter of 2 years & I went to Mt Hagen, Papua New Guinea. Locals in that area only saw their first European after WW2. We'd met Andrew Kei, in Port Morseby @ the Government accommodation. We invited Andrew to bring his family for a meal soon after we arrived. He brought his wife & his mother to our place. His wife spoke English but his mother only spoke the local language. Andrew was from the first group of young men who had been to high school in Hagen & because he'd done well academically he had been away to study law & had returned to serve his community. Some of his judgements upset people & his car was often stoned. The police vehicles, 4WDs were often stoned too. Andrew's mother sat on the floor with our daughter who was crying & spoke to her in the local language gently. I asked Andrew what his mother was saying. I noticed that his mother has some digits missing from her fingers as he translated & I asked what happened. His mother realised that he was translating what she was saying so she explained that when Andrew's father had died she had taken an axe & cut off the first digit of her left thumb & she went on to explain that she had chopped off other digits when she lost various other members of her family. We often stopped to talk with Andrew's wife & mother when we went to the open market to buy produce & we were well accepted by the locals.

g'day, P2.
In 2002 I was in Paris for a couple of days & I stopped in the metro to listen to an excellent accordian player. He played some Bach organ works beautifully. I stood close to the wall & listen as people hurried past. A year or so later I saw an SBS documentary on TV called "Paris DownUnder" about Australians in living Paris. When I heard the accordian player in the metro I thought, 'yes I watched him play, he was excellent,' & there I was standing close to the wall listening. I sent away to the film-maker, Richard Snashall asking if I could buy his dvd & I told him that it was me in the background. He not only sent me the movie as it went to air but he also included all the footage of me in the background as a clip at the end. Susan Egan, daughter of friends who live close to us is living in Paris. She's a dancer @ Moulin Rouge.
Richard's email address is -

We are all more than half water. The sounds & rhythms of the seas, the oceans, mountain streams, lakes & rivers are the fluid we all must have have to exist. But without the sun we would not have warmth & evaporation. And we need the moon to change the tides.

Thanks for your comment. In Tao Payoh town centre Singapore there is a very old tree that has many ribbons on it. That tree was there when the district was market gardens. The local farmers used to give respect to the spirit of the tree & even now people still go there to honour the Dao. The Dao is the unknowable source of the universe. We can get to know & understand the Dao by respecting the rhythms of nature. The Dao is formless. The Dao, like a circle that has no beginning and ending.

OPULENT RIDDLES FOR THE FAIRIES on 2007-07-24 04:59:30 |
|
We have crows around here, no ravens. A few years ago what must have been a very important crow was zapped on the power lines in front of our house. Many crows came to show their respects. Their sad cries continued night & day & then they flew away. I have never witnessed anything like that. Now my response to your riddle.. is raven [rave on] & the writing desk is where old writers used the quill, the pen. The quill was made from tail feathers .. of geese I think, but I guess any quill of a medium sized bird would do. There is an old saying that the pen is mightier than the sword. Even if that's not the answer it is an interesting take. I think the thing about riddles is that they are really not meant to be solved but to stir up curiosity & move people to review their mindset.

The Egyptians believed in an afterlife & built the pyramids. The Chinese emperors were buried in elaborate tombs with their stuff too. Now centuries later we look at their artifacts in museums & wonder. Many ancient peoples have left wonderful religious monuments celebrating their beliefs.
Do Christians have a handle on the truth & Nuiginians who dance all night around their totems don't? Christians show up once a week to eat their god & their priests drink his blood, put some money in the collection box & they're out the door in a flash. Are they just covering all the bases in case the church really does know the word of god?
Our current crop of political leaders in the west are all professing Christians & must believe in an afterlife when Jesus will judge their performances on earth. Maybe they won't even get to see Jesus when they die & will fry for what they have been doing on earth. Pretty lousy bunch of stewards I'd say.
I wonder what Jesus if he is really a god thinks of the almighty mess the 'coalition of the willing' under Christian leadership has made in Iraq. I wonder what Jesus thinks about the grab for oil & that Iraq has been transformed from a nation into a failed state.
I wonder what Jesus would say about the dropping of depleted uranium materials in Iraq & the fact that millions of people are displaced, some of them Christians too. And in the paper today an item about a soldier who got someone to shoot him in the leg so he wouldn't have to go back to fight in Iraq.
And why should the Christian religion, a product of the Roman Empire have a big grab on the truth? Just because Catholics are sitting on a huge pile of great European arts works & make a lot of money from tourists? Does being filthy rich which the Catholic Church is mean they know whether there is an afterlife anyhow? Or is it a big con & they're doing very out of it all, thankyou very much!
Lately the pope announced that his church is the one & only true church & all the rest are heretics. The Roman Church supressed & tortured many people who didn't believe their version of Christian dogma. Many great scientists & artists were ripped off by the church in the past. Many people leave their estate to the church in the hope that they will have paid for their sins & get into heaven by supporting the church on earth.
A Roman Emperor has a dream that he'd win a battle if he carried Christian emblems on his armour & he did & won. Then he legalised Christianity. Don't believe me - go & ask google...So like Islam Christianity is a religion born of conquest. Didn't you learn the song in Sunday School, "ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS" & fight the good fight... what arrogant rubbish.
