When working on my masters degree a couple of years ago, I did some research on this topic.
I found that students who were highly involved in extracurricular activities (3 or more - which allows for one in the fall, one in the winter, and one in the spring) failed classes at a much lower rate than students who were not highly involved in extracurricular activities. Students who were highly involved failed a class something like only 3 percent of the time, while those that were not as involved (in 0-2 activities) failed at least one class 49 percent of the time.
Students cited reasons for their involvement as motivation to pass their classes, time to spend with their friends, building stronger relationships with their sponsors/coaches.
Teachers also perceived student participation as a positive as it seemed to motivate the students to be more successful in their academic endeavors, whether it was something they were more interested in or not, however they also felt that if a student was involved in too many activities, it could also take away too much time that needed to be devoted to academics and in that case it would be a hindrance, not a benefit. |
