April 21-Initiative

Welcome to the 6th Six Weeks!  The blog will be possible interview questions you might be asked while looking for a job.  Think through your answer and compose it as though your future employer will be reading it.  I want you to be prepared as much as possible for the interviews you will face.  The way to prepare for anything is to practice.

Initiative is the power or ability to begin or to follow through energetically with a plan or task; enterprise and determination.  Today's blog:  Give a specific example of your initiative.  Your example can come from any of your own experiences such church, community, school or extra-curricular.  Maybe you planned an event for the youth group at church or maybe you saw solution to a problem at work.  Think of a time when you were uncertain how to begin but you made a decision and went with it.  Many of you are facing some major decisions such as where to attend college, where to work, and where to live.  Your example maybe that you visited several colleges and found the one that meets your needs.  I have heard that this blog is hard but show some "initiative" and really think about a specific example.  Have you ever made a suggestion on a better way to do something at work?  Have you ever practiced something more than what was required?  Have you ever been unsatisfied with something in your life so you took steps to change it?  Have you ever read a book or learned something just because you wanted to "conquer" it?  Have you ever done something nice for someone just because you wanted his or her life to be better?  Tomorrow's blog will be similar but I will try to make it more understandable.

About 3 years ago I wanted to get healthier and possibly lose a little weight. After much thought and complaining I decided to take some initiative and began training for my first triathlon. It was a “sprint” triathlon, which basically means short. I swam 400 meters, biked 10 miles and ran 3.1 miles. It was not easy and I did not finish in the top 10 (or top 100) but I was extremely proud of my accomplishment. I try to complete at least 1 triathlon each year now in order to give me some motivation to keep working out.

This May, Mrs. Maxfield and I will be running in a marathon relay where we both have to run 4.4 miles as part of a 6 person relay team. We have both taken initiative to train for the run. I am excited to see how it all turns out.

I would practice my hardest to get better at track and get my mile time down for this year in track. I was unsatisfied with the way i look so i started working out to try and lose weight. I succeeded in my goal.

I take initiative by setting my own goals and surpassing them. I set my goals higher than other people and people like working with me because I am not the kind of person who pushes work on other people.

Last year instead of taking a test in one of my classes I decided to do a project. I decided to make a journal about a girl during the Civil War in the South. I had to go and find out information about that time period and then I had to write the actual journal. I then made it look old by staining it and then burning it. It was really fun even though it took a long time.

Nice question posed. Initiative. I often lack that. There are many examples of little (seemingly insignificant to others) initiatives that I take everyday. One of them is to not give up. Another is to cope with stress/frustration/depression. I have taken several initiatives regarding some other issues but everytime my decision was been wrong. Now I have lost focus. I know what initiative I have to take next - but I am not hopeful enough. Not hopeful about whether it will lead to anything.
