| V |
I am curious to find out how other people felt about the first episode of the new series, "V". I thought it would go in one of two directions. Either they would do a campy over-the-top tongue-in-cheek remake of the first series, which would have been interesting. Or, as seems to be the case, they would remake the old series with new technology and effects, but with all of the flaws left in, and taking themselves way too seriously in the process.
I may watch another week or two to see if it gets better, but aside from the special effects the series was a disappointment. I thougth the acting was marginal and the story too much like the first series. The characters were stereotypical. The female single mother FBI agent with the rebellious teen son and the left-wing priest rebelling against his superior's opinion were bad enough, but the ammoral self-centered reporter and the vaguely sinister and beautiful aliens were too much. Maybe, over the course of the next couple of episodes, they will flesh them out into compelling characters, but the first episode does not seem to foreshadow that happening.
It is a common problem with science fiction in movies and television that the flash is more important to the producers than the charcters and dramatic values. That is why so many of the projects end up being failures. I hope this turns out to be a "Startreck" and not a "Lost in Space."
