 Teaching Yoga
“Give what you have to somebody, it may be better than you think.”
-- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

A few years ago, I began practicing yoga, after taking an eight year hiatus from it. My kids were entering that interesting age of “teenhood,” and I was struggling to redefine who I was, now that they needed me less. I was looking for balance in my life, and yoga brought that to me, especially after I learned to really listen to my body, mind and spirit.

But something else grew out of my own yoga practice: a desire to share that balance with others. About a year ago, I began to contemplate teaching yoga. Contemplation, for me, can take a long time. I have been known to contemplate buying a new couch for three years! I come into things with the belief that, if something is to happen, it should not be forced but evolve at its own pace.

So, one year later, I am teaching yoga. Reflecting on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s quote, I think I “get it.” When I share an hour of yoga with others, I receive as much enjoyment from it as if I were one of the students for the day. Teaching yoga and practicing with others makes my yoga experience better. And for that I am truly thankful.
