The Coffin Trick
Tonight Shannon and I watched a play: The Glass Menagerie. In Scene 4, Tom told his sister Laura about a magic show he had just come from: "But the wonderfullest trick of all was the coffin trick. We nailed him into a coffin and he got out of the coffin without removing one nail. ... There is a trick that would come in handy for me --get me out of this two-by-four situation! ... You know it don’t take much intelligence to get yourself into a nailed-up coffin, Laura. But who in Hell ever got himself out of one without removing one nail?" The "two-by-four" situation that Tom referred to, I suppose, was his crappy warehouse job combined with his nagging, always disapproving mother. She was funny to watch in a play, but she really brought her family down. There were moments of individual happiness, but none that stuck around. In a situation like that, nailed inside the proverbial coffin, who wouldn't want to know a little magic to get himself out?
