 Blog Post 3

For blog post 3 I chose the design above to discuss. While browsing on the AIGA website in the design archives I came across this add from 1963 designed by Hal Davis.
( This link is the actual ad: http://designarchives.aiga.org/?s1=2|s2=1|eid=14871 )
The ad was created for Elizabeth Arden's makeup collection. The design was inspired by the 1963 movie "Lawrence of Arabia". This movie was a big hit and so it only made sense to use this new craze to design an ad campaign. The new shade of lipstick and nail polish, "sheik" had its own tagline- "Sheik - a lip shade only the chic will know." This ad was giving women (the target audience) a new feeling about their lips and nails. It is an exotic theme and the women who wear “Sheik” can dream of the romance in the movie. By wearing “Sheik” you can become the leading lady.
The design of the ad is very affective. It is not complex but simple. The model in the ad is covered like the women in the movie were. The scarf over her head and face is an olive-green color which adds to the ad but does not over power the product. You can only see the woman’s eyes which are darker and although they are centered well your eyes do not draw to that point but to the lipstick and nails. The red-orange color of the product is very bright and interesting.
I found this design to be well done because with most lipstick ads the model would be wearing the color for us to see. We typically like to see the product being used before we purchase. This ad however has the lips of the model covered making the product different from all the other lipsticks you could choose from. You could also image what the color looks like on your own lips instead of a model with very plump and gorgeous lips.
I like ads that are simple and give you just enough information to have interest in the product but still allows you to use some imagination. Lipstick is a product used to become more attractive and desired and this ad could even be appealing to men; clearly most men would not buy the product but the ad may allow them to fantasize about their wife or girlfriend.
The typeface used at the bottom is a very feminine and light style. It is pretty easy to read but interesting like the ad and product. On the original ad there is more information that appears to be a simple type that can be read quickly and easily. Under all of the information is Elizabeth Arden's signature which I think gives the ad a personal touch.
Overall this ad for “Sheik” lipstick is a good design. Great use of color even though there is very little color variations in the ad. The placement of the model and product worked will. The product was not centered but was still the main attraction. The type was affective and complemented the design as a whole. I also think it was very wise to tie the product to a popular movie of the time/year.
