This past weekend me, my husband, and his family met up in the mountains for a family vacation. We had a great time shopping, spending time together, and my nephew actually planned a white water rafting trip on the Pigeon River.
I have never been rafting, and normally I would be worrying about falling out of the raft, hitting my head on a rock, and drowning. For some reason, I was really excited and was truly psyched about my first rafting trip.
The first thing that we were told was to pay attention and listen to the guide. Always do what the guide says. If he says row two strokes back, then that is what you do. If he says relax, then you relax. You obey the guide because you trust that he knows more than you, and his main goal is to keep you safe from harm.
How many times do we question our ultimate guide, God? How carefully are we listening to his voice, and following his instructions? How often do we choose to disobey, and find ourselves struggling in the cold rapids of life?
I believe obedience comes when we realize God's unfailing love for us and we trust that he only wants the best in our lives. Sometimes the directions may not make sense, but we must follow anyway because He ultimately knows what is best and what we need in life. When we trust the guide, we can work and enjoy our journey through this life. When we trust the guide, we can safely navigate the rapids of life and enjoy the scenery and adventure that they bring. When we trust the guide we will go places and experience things that we could never imagine in a million years.
