| The Right to Safety |
Yes, it is 3 am. I went to bed at 11:30, but Make It or Break It was on tonight. Not the point. By now you're probably wondering why I'm up after three hours of sleep and no I don't have insomnia. At this point I wish I did. What I have is a problem. I live in a newly constructed subdivision, sounds good right? Well....not so much. The subdivision literally across the road from the backside of my lot is old, in disrepair, and literally full of gangs and violence. I have an oversized lot and it has a six-foot fence which I put up before I could really afford to because of kids walking through my yard. Long story, short, I put in an electric dog door not so long ago and my dog was going crazy in the backyard at 2:30. I couldn't get her in and she may not be the best but she's generally fairly obedient. After ten minutes of yelling at her I finally mutter my final phrases, "Either bite whatever the hell it is or stop barking and come inside." Still no movement on her part, odd considering we generally use the word "here" as a come command and "come" has been trained to be used in emergencies only. I threw my hands up in the air and finally yelled out the door in sleep deprevation, "Fine, you keep barking, I'm going to get the gun and if anyone's in my yard at 2 in the morning it's merely assisted suicide." So, that's exactly what I did I went upstairs, got the gun, the flashlight and went out to investigate. By the time I got back down in the yard the barking had stopped. My eyes may have been playing me, but I swear I saw human shape shadows before I went to get the gun. It says a lot when you're afraid to go out in your own fenced yard at night without a shotgun. I'm sorry, but laws need to change and circumstances will change. I should have the right on MY property to shoot before getting shot. I should have the right to feel safe in my own home. I should not have to live with a security system on. In my grandparents day the gun was the security system and by God it worked damn well. We should have the RIGHT to protect our property, pets and person. BUT we don't. In Indiana you have to ask an intruder to leave three times before you can shoot. Ladies and gentlemen, use a shotgun. If you're closely range, they're dead and who's going to argue whether you told them to get the hell out once or three times. That is beside the point. We should have the right to feel safe in our homes and we can't do that if by law we are required to let the intruders in. I, personally, would rather scare the hell out of them first. So, I'll be up tonight and in the morning before I go to sleep I'll go check to see if my fence was tagged. Mother frackin' pitiful if you ask me. Because, this in and of itself leads to another question. Where are the parents? My kids ever pull this shit they better sure as hell plan not to sit again well into college. Worked on mama, worked on papa, and worked on me; should work on them.
