That encounter between Ashley and I never manifested as anything more.
When I found out she was doing a report on Master and Margarita (a
1950's russian novel based largely on the Faust legend) I rushed out to
the library and picked up the only copy left of Bulgakov's masterpiece.
I read 400 pages of russian literature in two days. When I left for
home a couple weeks later I didnt have an angelic girlfreind. But i did
have Dead Souls by Nicolas Gogol and Crime and Punishment by Fyodor
Dostoevsy. LONG story short: Ashley had opened up the world of
literature to me and believe me when I tell you I devoured it. From
russian literature to french to german, american, british, eastern,
everything I could get my hands on. What makes a book great is not the
story, its the idea behind the story. I became more curious about the
ideas and now I study Philosophy both as one of my majors (the other
two are Political Science, and Russian :) ) and as a hobby. I read and
think about it all the time. No one knows such despair as a philosopher
because he can descibe his predicament most accuratly. It was in this
mindset that I met Jen.
