If you really think about it, the Pledge of Allegiance , since 1952 or thereabouts, has become an oxymoron. That's when the Pledge was changed from "...one nation, indivisible..." to "...one nation, under God, indivisible...". So adding those two words, no longer made "indivisible" the power word it always had been.
The last time I can remember this country being "one nation, indivisible", was during WWII. Except for a few people who should have been living in Nazi Germany, and some possibly misguided fear of Americans of Japanese decent, this country really acted as one, undivided organism, a country whose people demonstrated tremendous pride in their nation. Ah, for the good ol' days.
So when a situation arises, like what has occurred in a high school here in Las Vegas, wher a student who didn't stand for the Pledge of Allegiance, was thrown out of his classroom by his teacher, who didn't know any better, we have a small uproar about the freedom of the indvidual. Listen, the young man didn't stand for the Pledge because he is not a believer in a god. OK, but he could recite the Pledge, leaving out that one phrase. That would make his expression of what he believes more effective.
And while I'm on this subject, how about a change in the swearing in of public officials.? When our leaders swear to defend the Constitution of the United States of America, they should swear upon that document, not upon some particular faith's bible.
