Some Ontario conservatives do not support MMP and this surprizes me. I would like to remind Ontario conservatives that the Federal Conservative Party in 1993 had over 20% of the popular vote but only had two of the over three hundred seats in the House of Commons and were greatly unrepresented. I would also like to remind Ontario Conservatives that the NDP won a majority government here in Ontario with only 37% of the popular vote. First past the vote is not a fair system, it creates phony majorities, and discounts and wastes over half of all votes. Under MMP we will still have the representation in every riding (something that conservatives support), but we will also have voting that is proportional, and better reflects the ideals of democracy, where every vote counts. Party list must be made public before an election, and the process in which the lists are created must also be made public. Political Parties can vote on list members, and this will increase party memberships. Also list members can be used to reflect northern and rural areas that are under represented, and better reflect women and other minority groups that are under represented in the Ontario Legislature. We will still have local representation and MMP will not under mind this in any way. With MMP we will also have proportional representation, and better representation for marginalized groups and locations in Ontario. I know conservatives like old things like outdated voting systems from the nineteenth century, but in the nineteenth century we were using out houses for bathrooms and wood ovens to heat irons. Things change, and so do political systems. First Past the Vote is outdated, and that is why countries and democracies all over the world are moving towards proportional governments. Ontario conservatives, I would like to welcome you to the twenty-first century.
