Don’t just say Support the Troops!
I see people wearing red on Fridays, and I see people with signs on their lawn or in their window that proudly state: “Support the Troops”. Some people will even sign petitions in support, or wave their Canadian Flag proudly on Remembrance Day. I am sure the troops appreciate all this, but these are all symbolic and token gestures. I think we can do more to support our troops; for starters we can bring them home! Since World War Two Canada has had a distinction of being Peace Keepers, until Canadian troops were sent to help the United States invade the sovereign nation of Afghanistan. The invasion was in retaliation to the horrific 9-11 terrorist attacks committed by citizens of Saudi Arabia (not Iraq or Afganistan). I think Canadian resources would have been best spent keeping the peace, not further destabilizing an already chaotic region. That is why I say, “Bring our troops home”, and lets not put them into harms way unless it is absolutely necessary! Canada can still do more to support the troops by assuring that they have the safest equipment to defend themselves in battle and in self defense. If a Canadian Solider dies in action, there spouse and/or children should be fairly compensated. Money will never bring back a dead one, but when that solider is dying he or she can rest in peace knowing their family will be taken care of in their absence. Perhaps a huge sum like one million dollars for every dead solider would make the Federal Government think twice about sending troops to war, and assure that the Government buys the safest equipment possible for our soldiers. The next time you wear red on Friday or stick up a lawn sign, ask yourself what else we can do to support our troops?
