 Carrying the Burden
Tanzan and Ekido were once traveling together down a muddy road. A heavy rain was still falling. Coming around a bend, they met a lovely girl in a silk kimono and sash, unable to cross the intersection. "Come on, girl" said Tanzan at once. Lifting her in his arms, he carried her over the mud. Ekido did not speak again until that night when they reached a lodging temple. Then he no longer could restrain himself. "We monks don't go near females," he told Tanzan, "especially not young and lovely ones. It is dangerous. Why did you do that?" "I left the girl there," said Tanzan. "Are you still carrying her?" –Zen koan.

Too many times in life, we make decisions based on the information at hand but then question the decision made. We then continue to carry these decisions with us long after the event has played out, whici only serves to create a sense of disharmony as we question the decision, analyze it and mull it over and over and over again. “Did I do the right thing?”

If we, like Tanzan, however, can learn to leave the decision behind once it’s played out, we detach from it and can suffer no after effects. Recognize that a decision was made and, once it’s over, it’s over forever. The only way it can exist at all is if you recreate it in your mind. If you find yourself doing this, ask, “Why won’t I let this go?” and see what answers arise. Once you know why you’re holding on to the past, you can leave it where it belongs instead of continuing to carry the burden.

Blessings,
J.H.
