| They Might Be Giants |
|
So the game of the year in the NFL is fast approaching, Saturday 8:15 EST, and there are two schools of debate on what should happen. Should the Giants play their starters? Is it their fault that the other 15 teams in the league could not stop the Pats? Do they have a greater obligation to themselves or to the league?
You know that the Pats are going to come to play, they want that perfect season and have worked for it all year. Belichick is not going to jeopardize his and his teams’ place in history now. So, Tom Coughlin needs to…
Rest their players! They are very few positive outcomes for this game for the Giants; the only way that they can be successful is if they win, stay healthy, and somehow rest their starters all in the same game. That is very unlikely since they will be playing one of the best teams in history.
Plaxico Burress can hardly run on that ankle, it has been sore for half of the year and every time he plants on it he loses more and more explosiveness that he will need in the playoffs for them to be successful.
Eli Manning has been hurt a couple of times this year already, do you really want to risk your franchise quarterback in this situation? If he goes down for the season in a meaningless game from the Giants standpoint, how fast do you think Coughlin will be out the door?
They already lost Jeremy Shockey for the year; they have no need to risk any of their other key players. I know that a win would be a huge momentum push for them heading into the playoffs, but it is not worth the risk. They would be mortgaging their post season future on a long-shot upset bid. The Patriots are a juggernaut, and a motivated one at that, they won by 21 points last week and that was a disappointment. They are the only team I have ever heard of that had people predicting 70 point games and 35 point spreads. They would be a two touchdown favorite if both teams were healthy, forget about it with the loss of Shockey and the gimping of Burress and Brandon Jacobs.
This game has blow out written all over it, there may be a chance at a lot of momentum, but there is an equal chance at a back-breaking defeat that could send their season down for the count.
