| Would It Be Better If She Did?

With each new wave, cold water rises higher, freezing more of my shivering corpse. My numb hands absentmindedly shift the rocks beside me to my lap, to keep myself from floating up.
I rock back and forth with the waves, staring at the reflection of the full moon on the calm ocean, and think of the story my grandfather would tell me as a child. "When you die," he would say, calm and sure, "your spirit walks the silver trail the moon makes for you on the water, and takes you to heaven."
I wipe my face with the back of my hand but only achieve in making it even more wet than before. I am not crying anymore, the cold has stopped and now I am warm, and the water feels lovely on my skin. I close my eyes and feel the water take a daring rise to my neck, and I smile. I picture heaven, and wonder if it could be anywhere near as beautiful as the path that leads to it. I turn my lips towards the sky to breath as the water rises ever still to meat my cheek, and I taste salt.
I take one last breath before shifting first my right leg, then my left, and I feel the rocks slip down to the sand, and barnacles mark my skin before they leave, though they do not hurt. I rise unsteadily and take one last look at my silver trail before I turn my back on it.
It would be so much easier if I could only believe in heaven.
