 Iran
"I think it is very important for the international community to recognize the fact that if Iran were to develop the knowledge [of nuclear weapons] that they could transfer to a clandestine program, it would create a danger for the world" --President Bush in a press conference 12/4/2007

Let's face it- nuclear weapons are nasty things.

Even with as conservative as I am I hope to never be stupid or cynical enough to seriously consider nuclear weapons (short of an atomic attack aimed at the US or one of our allies).  You can debate the issue of Iran having or not having WMD (namely nuclear) until your blue in the face, but the way that I see it this whole controversy boils down to 3 words.  Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD).

According to Charles Kegley, Corporate Secretary of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs and past President of the International Studies Association, Mutually Assred Destruction is defined as "a condition of mutual deterrence in which both sides possess the ability to survive a first strike with weapons of mass destruction andlaunch a devastating retaliatoy attack."  Put simply- a nuclear nation is highly unlikely to use nuclear weapons because the rest of the nuclear community has time to retaliate with an even stronger force.

This principle is what kept the Cold War from turning hotter than Hillary Clinton when she failed to pass a national health care plan as First Lady (well that and Reagan's willingness to call the Soviet Union out as an evil empire).  Because the US used the atomic bombs on Japan, both Washington and Moscow were aware of the severity of this new technology and were therefore unwilling to be the first to use it against the other.  MAD is even more applicaple today with more countries possessing nuclear capabilities.  The threat is not Iran (unless Ahmadinejad decided to be the fashion consultant for the rest of the world).

Where the threat does lie is in the ability of international terrorist organizations to obtain nuclear technology from countries like Iran.  Mutually Assured Destruction only works as long as both sides fear retaliation.  But for terrorists- who dress as civililans, have no official borders, nor country- what is to prevent them from using these horrible weapons against Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, San Francisco, etc. and then just disappearing behind the women and children that they love so much (love is such a strong word, but how else does one describe the feelings they have for the innocent second-class citizen who unwillingly dies for the cause?).

President Bush may have been wrong about Iran currently working on developing a nuclear weapon.  But he was absolutely correct to continue classifying Iran as a threat to the United States, our national initerests, and the stability not only of the Middle East but also the enire world.

Nuclear or not, Iran and their crazy leader (whose name really should be Iwantajihad) still belongs in the Axis of Evil, along with North Korea, and France (now that Iraq is free from Sadaam's tyranny a new evil needs to step forward; though, in the case of the French they're more likely to run backwards).

Hey jalex,
Actually Iran is nothing to worry about, because Ahmadinejad knows if he were to ever deploy a nuclear device, the retaliation would wipe his country off the face of the earth.
The true concern is a nuclear weapon in the hands of a terroist organazation, which Iran would not have second thoughts about selling one once they had the technology.
It is a sad state of humanity that world leaders are all cowards. They themselves are never willing to lead the charge, but are qutie vocal about sending the common folks to their deaths.
Yes even Bush would run like a coward if he had to walk the streets of D.C. Without the secret servicemen who put their lives on the line for him, he could not stand on his own two feet.
But as long as we follow our leaders we are going to be sacrifeced over and over again. That has it always has been, and that is the way it is always going to be.
The leaders of all the countries of the world are so far removed from real people, that they have no-idea what it is like to have to work and struggle for a living.
When it comes down to it, they are all just puppets for the people with the real money.
A man or woman might begin polotics with an eye for real change, but when you get to the bottom line, even in comunism money rules period!

Love & Peace,
jwcj
