Today is the start of my blog about living in Jackson Heights, New York. I have been reading about how Jackson Heights has become an up and coming neighborhood with trendy shops opening up and tasty restaurants everywhere. Realtors exclaim how close we are to Manhattan, how charming the neightborhood is, how stunning and breathtaking the coops are. It sounds wonderful. It makes you think about how you would like to live here. However, the realtors fail to tell the whole truth.
There is a darkside to Jackson Heights. Crime is high and gang activity is on the rise. One only has to read the local precinct statistics and the crime report in the community news papers to know that as the economy has fallen the crime has increased. Gang activity has gotten so bad that our local State Senator John Sabini held a community meeting school on gang activity. We also have rampant problems with immigrants (especially the out of status kind) living 12 people to a one bedroom apartment.
I have decided to write about the real Jackson Heights. The one realtors do not wish to tell Manhattanites, Park Slopers or anyone else who has not visited or lived in the hood. It will help to provide an accurate perspective on a neighborhood that has gone astray. It will be a story that I wished was told when I decided to buy into this "wonderful, trendy, up and coming" neighborhood of Jackson Heights
