| Another Day, Another Dollar |
Finally made it into the office. I must admit I am getting to hate my commuter run more and more. After three years of travelling to and from Watford, I find that the 2 to 2 and half hour journey is just killing me. If it was just one train from A to B that wouldn't be so bad. At least then I could do some things like study, read a good book or grab some good kip. But within 20 minutes I have to change trains, walk what seems to be half a mile (platform 3 to platform 17 on Clapham Junction station), a journey I might point out that seems to have grown in distance over the three years, and wait for my connecting train. Once I've gotten that it's another 20 minutes to half an hour and I'm in Watford. Now I know some of you will try to do the maths and come up short of the two and half hours I quoted at the start. Much of my time travelling is either getting to or from the stations usually by bus or on foot or and this is the real killer, having to wait for a connecting train. I seem to have spent a life time waiting at platforms for trains that always seem to be late.
However, I have made it into the office - even if I am more tired now then when I started out - and my grindstone is running at full pelt this morning. I am not sure how I've found the time to post this but I have. Unusually for me, I seem to have a very full in-box - well over a 100 emails today when I got in. Most of which I can and have deleted. But some days I just feel overwhelmed at the deluge. Most of them are of a technical nature, mostly stuff about Systems Administration in UNIX, stuff about Oracle databases and stuff about web pages. About 25% are actually directly work related. And of those only one or two are directed at me and are for me or my work. Aaaghhhh. Some days I feel like I can't cope anymore. I've now reached the point where I've set up rules for my email client to delete certain emails as soon as they arrive. It reduces the work load (no more having to trawl through emails to weed out the ones I can delete straight off), it reduces eye strain...no longer having to preview the emails and best of all, my in-box is not so flooded each morning. Result!
Now, if only I could find a way to make a rule for my commute to work..........
