 Ears on strike

I have not yet learnt to listen through my ears and I shall never will - I am sure those of you who will read this and say why?  I shall not hear you but I will read your messages - this is the only way I know how to - I am profoundly deaf and I thought I'd write a blog about the deaf side of life and the experience we face on a daily basis.....Even asking for a first class stamp is a struggle.  Embarassed

There are lot of little things that is frustrating for a deaf person - we deafies like to think ourselves equals and that our language - British Sign Language is a recognised one - We forget that we are deaf, which is a blissful feeling, until we meet someone who wants to ask a question - they speak too fast and you have to stop them and say I am deaf, please say again.......The majority get stunned, then say never mind and walk away leaving you feeling frustrated - yeah frustrated that you are unable to help them, frustrated at their ignorance and frustrated with the absurdiness of the conversation being cut short.

Like you we are human beings and we strive for communication, recognition and inclusion rather than being silent, forgotten and abandoned.

I shall use this blog to bring a little taster of our deaf lives each time I make an entry, and hope you will enjoy reading this.

I know exactly what you're going through, my Grandmother and Mother are deaf, and I am greatly hearing impaired...though with hearing aids, I'm a hearing person. It's rough trying to sign to someone when in public and people simply gawk and stair, and when they do try to talk to you and you tell them "I read lips"...they take that as "I read tonsils" and open and contort their mouths, making it damn impossible to see what they're saying.

I make it a point to help anyone who is signing to communicate with someone at a store, it's sad that more people don't do this.
