This afternoon, I got a phone call. My elderly neighbor, Miss Becky, called me hysterical. Remember from a previous post that she is 93 years old.
She has an aging cat and he has been sick lately. He has been urinating on the carpet, not eating regular meals, runny stool and losing lots of weight. Losing 2-3 pounds in 3-4 months can be very harmful to a cat. Now her cat has two new problems.
Miss Becky called me to tell me that her precious cat is not only dealing with two abscessed teeth but is now blind in both eyes.
She is devastated. Distraught because Stormie is not getting off of the floor. He won’t sit in his favorite chair or even go out onto their screened in patio.
She did not mention putting him down and I didn’t bring it up. I am praying for her comfort as well as the cats comfort. Whatever she decides to do, I will be there to support and help her through this.
I don’t think its fair (as someone who is owned by pets) to let a pet get to a point where it is hard to function. He is too old to be put to sleep to have the teeth removed and now with the blindness, the vet is doubly worried that it will cause the cat to die of starvation even though it can smell where its food is.
She has not moved anything in the house. She won’t even push in the chairs at the kitchen table because they were not pushed in before she went to the vet. She doesn’t know when the cat went blind so she doesn’t want to change things for him to become confused.
My heart is breaking. I am not sure what I can do.
