 Unnecessary Iran Hype
The political turmoil in Iran has created attentions much more than what it deserves. US, UK and some western European nations have expressed their dissatisfactions over the way in which the election was held, and the tumult that followed it. Expressing their view on issues is definitely not something which could be chastised, but in this case it seems as if the western nations are going a little bit too much in meddling in the internal affairs of Iran. Irrespective of the whether the election is debauched or not, other nations must respect Iran’s sovereignty, and let the country determine the course of actions needed to be taken. Some western powers go a step further by trying to tarnish the image of Iran by accusing it of human rights abuses. These abuses – usage of force against protesters, and unfortunate deaths – are evident during protests in these nagging nations as well. An exemplary example for this is the protest during G20 meeting in London, when many were beaten up brutally and the death of an innocent man.
The criticizing countries must have taken a smooth diplomatic approach instead of getting involved in acrimonious diatribes. That would have helped assuage the growing tensions between the western powers and Iran. Already relations between the west and Iran are sour, after the former evinced a clear opposition over Iran’s ambitious nuclear plans. The western call for the Iranian Election Annulment added fuel to the fire.
Even though all major western powers are to be blamed for this hostile situation none deserves more credit than Britain, at least according to Iran. Iran-Britain relationship is already acrid. There are several reasons for this. One of it is the alleged British involvement in helping Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war. The Iranian supreme body impugns Britain’s stance in the post-election fiasco. The hostility between the two nations gets further exacerbated when the Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Khameni openly condemned Britain over its alleged involvement in the ongoing public tumult against the Iranian government, followed by the expulsion of two British diplomats. Britain’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown was quick to rebuke, and in a step to mollify the situation he said Britain’s concern is only over Iran’s nuclear programme and not over the alleged nepotism. This gesture of slaking is an appreciable step by the British Prime Minister; however it is not going to have a profound effect in easing the animosity between the two nations.
Each and every nation has its own sovereignty, and it detests any other nation’s overstated involvement in its internal affairs. This is one thing the western powers have to imbibe. If they are prudent enough to understand the implications of the forth said statement, a lot of misunderstandings can be removed. It will also help in developing well-disposed relations between nations.
