| XBox 360 - My moment of dread...
|

|
My first purchase of Xbox 360 was at the beginning of 2007. It lasted so long unlike my other friends - the dreadful 3ROD (or better known as Ring of Death). I thought I can pull it through... sadly... it's not 3ROD at all that my unit finally succumb to it's hardware failure... it was System Error E 74.
It started 3 days ago when my display LCD started to act funny. There were distorted lines as I was playing Burnout Paradise. I on and off my unit... just to restart and see how it goes. It started back normal but in a matter of minutes, it's back to the same distorted line. It was yesterday then, I receive one red light. On the bottom right corner, there's a red light. On the display it says "System Error, please contact customer support" and directly at the bottom with other languages it stated "E 74".
I wonder what it was and send my unit to Gamer's Hideout (my local gamestore I regular in) and by afternoon, the technician said it can't be done - I have to send my unit to Singapore. As I quiry further, this is something like 3ROD... what involves is an Anadtech Chip; a chip that controls the AV Output... one that was told to be the secret weapon against PS3. Well, it's no longer a secret weapon when most hardware failure was cause by the same chip. In short - it burn out. Made from Taiwan... go figure.
With that, I made more research. I found out that to replace that chip, it would cost me USD 140... almost 1/2 the price of a Premium Set I bought then. As I look elsewhere for more solutions, it becomes inevitable I have to go to Singapore since Microsoft Malaysia doesn't do XBox 360 repairs. The cost of me going and back and back again will definitely cost an exact 1 entire unit of it - not to mention the repair cost I have to pay since my warranty is over. This saddens me totally... and I went back to my regular shop and ask for an opinion...
What I get is a no guarantee that the technician will do whatever he can to fix it. If it can't be fix, it's going to be a brick. So when that happens, my life with my 360 ends there until I am able to buy another unit or do an exchange 1 on 1 - which will take 6 months. Since I have heard Elite have less problem... but what I found out Microsoft is still using the same chip too... which, if by any choice, will suffer the same fate.
Right now, I am waiting from my technician to say whether he can save the console or not... I doubt it will be safe since he can't guarantee it and chances for it to become brick is high... still... one week... not hoping for anything but just give it a try and see how it goes... |
