| awful pageant requirement

I started watching a trailer for a documentary that aired on PBS some months ago on the competition for the title of Miss Navajo.
I was really interested in watching this and was sorry that I missed it. All the contestants for the title had to be at least 18, never married and not have anychildren. They also have to speak Navajo in order to win the pageant, and the winner gets to be a representative of her tribe. It was all beautiful to look at - the young women dressed in their native clothes with their dark hair neatly pulled back and carefully braided... gorgeous. Beautiful beadwork and pottery, and native music and dancing, etc. This documentary had my complete attention.
well, all my positive attention went out the window when I saw that part of the competition required that the contestants slaughter a sheep.
Next thing I know, Im watching these girls draggging and pulling a terrified sheep, then they show a clip of another girl that already had her sheep with its feet tied up and lying on its side on a table and there was blood all over the place but she hadnt murdered the sheep yet.
I just quit watching because this disturbed and disgusted me. I wonder how these young women feel about having to kill an animal in order to win that title.
Dont they feel any pity for the animal they have to kill? Its not like they are killing the sheep in order to survive. I saw this as killing for sport.... or even as animal sacrifice. Whatever happened to the native philosophy of taking only what you need?
I dont understand why something like this has to be part of a competition. Culture?? ALL cultures that eat meat must slaughter animals.. does that mean that Miss USA should know how to slaughter a cow/pig/chicken and prove it so that she can win the title? Or should she know how to bake an apple pie? Thats a big part of american culture too!
It bothers me that there are people that dont see anything wrong with inflicting fear and pain on another living thing, even if it is "just an animal". I understand having to kill an animal when your own survival depends on it, but I will never understand or approve of it when its done for sport.
J goes hunting with the men in his family every year, and this next year he wants to take our son, Eric. Eric will be 5 years old. I have already told him that he isnt going and J and I argue back and forth about it. Maybe I'll suggest that we let Eric decide whether or not he wants to go. Eric is kind to animals and Ive explained to him what hunting is, and he knows how Mommy feels about guns and knives and killing: IT'S WRONG!!!!!
On a different note: I saw a gigantic stuffed animal sheep at the store last week and thought it was the cutest thing. It was in the seasonal aisle, with all the easter stuff. It had light pink fleece, and an adorable face. 20 bucks. At the time I thought it was too expensive. Well GUESS WHAT. I'm gonna go buy it. It will look cute in my girls' room.

Yuck, what a way to have a pagaent...The things people do to get noticed...So stupid isn't it????I honestly think 5 is TOO young to go hunting...kids can't be quiet enough for the hunter. So I would be worried that J would get upset with the boy and not be so nice....Maybe when he is 7...SO you have abit of time to convince your husband that your son is way too young....
Aww, that is sweet to buy the sheep now..You have a big heart.
