| Every Band Does Not Sound Like Radiohead
So at my alma mater, St Bonaventure, I had a radio show with a friend of mine for a while. The station has/is ranked number one in the country for college radio stations. I cant really understand why. While there were a few decent DJs, for the mst part, they played the same crap over and over. You know, the punk-emo, blame-your-parents, hate-your-ex-girlfriend shit that should make anyone with the smallest sense of musical taste cringe. The fucks at the station ate this shit up with a spoon. You know, the Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, and how could I forget, Panic! at the Disco (yes, that "!" is in the right place) sort of bands. I can't give you the names of the lesser-known of these horrendous bands, because, thank God, I don't know them. I shant be getting into the whole "emo" scene today; no, I think that topic will warrant a special week-long blog, detailing the many, many issues I have with it. I only mention it today, because I was reminded of a conversation I had with a member of the radiostation a while back. Via AIM, we were talking music, I asked him how Voxtrot's first LP was. He said it was good, but not as good as the EPs. (He was right though; the LP was good, but not as good as the EPs. Recommended: their Raised by Wolves EP, its exceptionally well-done pop music.) I asked him what else he recommended and he said Cale Parks. He said they sounded like Radiohead. So today, I finally listened to their album. It was pretty good, thoguh nothing special, but it sounded nothing like Radiohead. This is not the first time this has happened; a band that essentially plays rock music, but uses unusual rythms and instruments not normally associated with rock music, is automatucally dubbed as "sounding like Radiohead." No they don't. The only band that I can safely say does sound like Radiohead is Eastern Conference Champions, due in large part to the fact that their lead singer sounds incredibly similar to Radiohead's singer, Thom Yorke. My blogging nemisis, Jack Doyle, says this all the time. He said it about Sigur Ros. Rubbish! Sigur Ros is an ambient, Icelandic band, that uses a lot of reverb and sings in a made up language. Yeah, that could just as easily describe Radiohead, right? Essentially, if it isn't "mainstream" rock (see Nickleback, Three Doors Down), then, well, it must sound like Radiohead. The next time someone tells you that a band sounds like Radiohead, ask them how? or why? They won't have an answer. They're idiots for making a commment like that and hopefully they'll reconsider making such an ignorant and unfounded statement the next time they want to pretend like they know their ass from their elbow when it comes to music.

That paragraph wasn't hard to read. I thought "ambient" referred to background noise like birds chirping or a babbling brook. I didn't think it meant boring icelandic rambling played to what sounds like some stock movie soundtrack material. I think you have either have to be full of shit, or on ecstasy to enjoy music like this.
